INTERN POSITION TITLE: Intern, Asia/Eurasia Partnerships DEPARTMENT: Global Programs LOCATION: Stamford, CT ASSIGNMENT LENGTH AND HOURS: This is a summer internship opportunity that runs from June to August 2013. This position requires a minimum commitment of 4 days per week as well as consistent attendance to ensure that projects are seen to completion. ABOUT AMERICARES AmeriCares is a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization that delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world and across the United States. Since it was established in 1982, AmeriCares has distributed more than $10 billion in humanitarian aid to 164 countries. POSITION SUMMARY The Asia/Eurasia Partnerships division is one of four regional teams within the Global Programs department of AmeriCares. We support health care and social service programs in such countries as Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Kosovo, the Philippines, Romania, and Uzbekistan. Our programs combine gift-in-kind aid donations with financial grants and training opportunities in order to build local capacity to address some of the most pressing health care issues, including: disaster management, maternal and neonatal survival, child nutrition, infectious disease outbreaks, and prevention and control of chronic conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The AmeriCares internship in Asia/Eurasia Partnerships provides an exciting opportunity for a student interested in humanitarian aid operations in the region. Our three-person team manages a diverse and challenging portfolio that offers a very substantive work experience for an intern. The position is structured such that the intern is engaged in daily workflow by taking on assignments of immediate importance while also managing longer-term projects that will help strengthen our efficiency and effectiveness. In addition, throughout the duration of the internship, the intern will participate in an institution-wide group project along with other summer interns.

Responsibilities

Approximately 65% of the intern’s dedicated time will be spent on longer-term projects, while the other 35% will focus on short-term assignments. Longer-term projects will include: • Work closely with the Director of Asia/Eurasia Partnerships to research and support the development of a Regional Strategic Framework • Strengthen the following existing projects by providing background research, completing basic reports, designing multi-year activity plans, tracking and evaluating data, and – in some cases— helping AmeriCares identify and approach additional donors of funds, pharmaceutical products, equipment: o Disaster Preparedness and Response in several East and Southeast Asian countries, including Philippines, Myanmar/Burma, and Vietnam o Pharmacist Training in Bangladesh o Breast Cancer Prevention and Treatment in Cambodia o Maternal and Neonatal Survival in Afghanistan and Kosovo o Child Nutrition in Vietnam o Chronic Disease Management in Armenia, Romania and Uzbekistan o TOMS Shoes in Afghanistan, Armenia, Cambodia, Uzbekistan and other countries • Research and identify potential new beneficiary partners within Asia and Eurasia • Other research, writing and data analysis as needed • Participate and contribute to the production of a group intern video project. Short-term assignments will include: • Provide support to the gift-in-kind donation process, including product allocation, shipment tracking, data analysis and problem solving • Strengthen regional information management by organizing and integrating trip reports, partner overviews, needs lists, and basic data collected in the field • Contribute to web content and marketing materials that highlight AmeriCares work in Asia and Eurasia • Research and draft brief Product Donation Requests to help source pharmaceutical products in response to specific needs of partners • Provide general administrative support to the team EXPERIENCE GAINED: • Helping to directly address developing-country healthcare problems, particularly limitations on access to affordable medications; • Supporting the safe and effective distribution of medications across the two regions, through various logistical and supply chain models; • Managing pharmaceutical product donations, including gaining an understanding of various disease states, medication categories, and some of the risks and safeguards relating to international aid distribution. • Team building skills and the value of the team approach in problem solving and project development

Requirements

- Current undergraduate student (preferably rising junior or senior) interested in international humanitarian aid/development, global/public health etc.; - Record of academic achievement and seriousness of purpose; - Excellent research and writing skills; - Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Word and Outlook required; - Strong organization skills; - Prior office/administrative experience preferred; - Self-starter -- ability to work independently and meet deadlines; - Team orientation -- balanced focus on personal accountability and team goals; - Career interest in global health, international development, emergency response, and/or international affairs; APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS - We will require a resume, cover letter and two writing samples (1-2pgs) - Application deadlines for internship opportunities are April 1st, 2013.
