Legal Aid Society of Orange County provides civil legal services to low-income individuals and promotes equal access to the justice system through advocacy, legal counseling, innovative self-help services, in-depth legal representation, economic development and community education. As a court form transcriber you will learn how to transcribe court forms under the supervision of a licensed attorney as well as have the opportunity to learn various types of law such as Family Law (divorce, paternity, custody/visitation), Consumer Finance (collection, contracts), Bankruptcy, Health Benefits (medi-cal, Medicare, private health insurance, state and local health), State Benefits (social security, SSI, unemployment, Cal Works), Education (student financial aid, special education), Employment (wage claims, taxes, employee rights) and Housing (private landlord tenant, federally subsidized housing, mortgage foreclosure).
Responsibilities
Typical intern tasks can include: Drafting questions under the supervision of a licensed in order to explain to a client the necessary steps and information needed to fill out court forms. Research laws to ensure that forms are properly filled out; Help organize and manage the daily business operations; including but not limited to, data entry, and correspondence. Help with fundraising and locate private and public grants; interested interns will also be given the opportunity to perform legal related research on the internet. New tasks and responsibilities arise regularly. The Legal Aid Society is willing to help you meet requirements to receive credit, locate research paper topics, and discuss careers. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain practical experience as well as allow you the opportunity to help you gain valuable skills needed to market yourself in the professional legal world.
