Description
Assumes complete responsibility for facilitating the transfer of patient health record from paper to Electronic Health Records (EHR). Identifies key data elements in the medical record, interprets and analyzes medical record documentation, and extrapolates pertinent health information into EHR. The work of a Medical Records Abstractor is performed in both paper charts and EHR.
Students will also get the opportunity to observe and participate in the business office at an outpatient, ambulatory site. Before a student begins the abstraction process they will have a complete understanding of an outpatient office flow.

Requirements
Education:
Minimum - high school education.
Preferred - enrollment in Medical Assistant, Medical Office assistant, Health Information Management, LPN, RN program, or related program. Previous medical office training desired.
Experience:
Preferred - One year of experience in a medical or physician office. Basic business office and computer skills. Proficient in medical terminology. Knowledge and skills to assess and release protected patient information according to federal and state laws.

Minimum:
• Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of organizational members, outside customers and community groups. Skills with the ability to comfortably interact with diverse populations.
• Ability to work collaboratively in team-oriented environment with a strong customer-service orientation.
• Ability to independently plan, organize, prioritize, schedule, coordinate, and make decisions relating to assigned tasks and responsibilities.
• Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.
• Ability to demonstrate competency with a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including a basic understating of email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required performing the essential functions of the job.
• Knowledge of general clerical/office procedures with the ability to maintain accurate records.
• Good organizational skills in order to manage competing priorities and work under tight deadlines.
• Ability to use problem-solving skills to resolve conflicting, missing, or unclear information within patient record.
• Must be able to type at least 30 adjusted words per minute.
Preferred:
• Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, standard medical abbreviations, and pharmacy terms sufficient to identify proper location of specific health information.
• Working knowledge of clinical workflows to understand types of health information most pertinent to various visits and procedures.
• Familiar with EHR computer software, maintaining EHR security, and analyzing electronic data to improve healthcare information.
