**This is a night shift position**
Perform routine and special blood bank procedures to obtain data or prepare products for the diagnosis and treatment of disease and the provision of quality patient care.
Determine suitability of specimens and orders by verifying patient demographic information and receipt documentation; recognize and troubleshoot erroneous, inconsistent and special orders; organize and prioritize so blood products are provided as needed and requested; perform routine and special blood bank procedures; select the proper blood for patients based on individual needs; evaluate results; recognize abnormal test results and perform problem solving procedures; respond to emergency situations and STATs and provide the services or blood product needed; assist in troubleshooting specimen problems and errors; communicate QC problems, exceptional patients, donor problems or transfusion reactions. Order blood products and supplies and fill patient orders; determine suitability of blood products (from receipt to final disposition) and quarantine or discard unsuitable units; select compatible blood products to be cross-matched or set up on patients; aseptically alter blood products as needed. Perform and document results of QC procedures and quarantine defective reagents; perform and document as-needed maintenance on instruments (serologic centrifuges, cell washers, cell processors and irradiator); record temperatures and monitor functions of blood storage refrigerators and freezers; record temperatures of water baths, heat blocks, reagent refrigerators and room temperature; perform or assist with troubleshooting reagent QC and instrument problems, evaluation of new instruments and procedures and writing of new procedures; assist in reviewing completed work, QC records and maintenance records. Participate in the teaching of other personnel (new employees and students) and continuing education.
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of blood bank theory and laboratory operations. The ability to operate a PC and other equipment including cell washers, blood processors, gamma cell irradiator, microscopes, centrifuges, water baths and agglutination viewers.
Education, Licensure and Experience:
Bachelor of Science degree with one of the following certifications required: MT (ASCP or AMT); MLS (ASCP); BB (ASCP); valid MT license from any state.
