Natural Awakenings magazine is a free monthly publication about personal and planetary well-being. It features local and national editorial content on topics such as integrative medicine, natural health, nutrition, fitness, spirituality and personal growth, the arts and creative expression, green sustainable living and more. Natural Awakenings offers a forum in which to advertise and highlight local retailers and service providers in these categories. The magazine, published by Gail Heard, operates in New Haven and Middlesex Counties, Connecticut. It is one edition in a national team of over 83 independently owned magazines with an eye to creating a healthier world one community at a time.

Internship Description: This professional internship involves working toward the successful launch of the magazine’s national discount card (Natural Awakenings Network, or NAN card) program in which local businesses/practitioners offer a special NAN card-only discount on their services for anyone who purchases the card for a nominal fee. It offers a terrific opportunity to build a variety of skills and experiences in marketing, sales, communication and more.


The NAN Operations Facilitator will
1. Research local businesses and practitioners that specialize in healthy and green living.
2. Contact the local businesses and practitioners to market the NAN program and all its benefits to their business and or practice.
3. Answer any questions and concerns the business and practitioners have about the NAN program.
4. Invite the interested businesses and practitioners to sign up for the NAN program.
5. Send the interested businesses and practitioners the paperwork to sign up for the NAN program.
6. Follow up with the business on their process with filling out the paperwork.
7. Submit the completed paper work to the Publisher, Gail Heard.
8. Follow up with the businesses and practitioners about the start date of the NAN program.

You will have the opportunity to be recognized in Natural Awakenings publication as an ambassador that is building/has built the NAN Card Program. Any work that is not confidential can be added to your professional portfolio. You will work directly with the Publisher and get the inside, behind-the-scenes view of both a small business franchise and publication. You will have access to a variety of professional training materials on sales, marketing, event planning, and other topics. Successful interns will receive a letter of recommendation and referrals to important business and employment contacts. We will gladly help you arrange for academic credit. Therefore, willingness to travel to this area is essential.

Location: This is a mostly virtual internship. You will primarily work independently from home. Meeting with and speaking to the local businesses and practitioners in the New Haven and Middlesex Counties are required. Therefore, willingness to travel to New Haven and Middlesex Counties, CT area is essential.

Timeline: Start immediately. Internships can range from 150 to 300 hours. Typically interns average 10 hours per week. These terms are flexible and negotiable. We will decide your time commitment together prior to the start of your internship.

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship, but the professional experience is priceless.

Ideal Candidate Is: Organized, detail-oriented, and great at communication. Must have great listening skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills. Comfort and proficiency with technology such as email, the Internet, MS Office and willingness to learn user-friendly software. Willing to learn, ask questions, work in a team environment and be successful at managing multiple tasks. Must be flexible and adaptable, able to handle changes in projects and priorities (which can be typical as sales and marketing evolve and the project progresses). Must be reliable, punctual, and able to attend a weekly 1/2 hour phone call to report on and alert the Human Resources Talent Scout intern to the progress being made on signing the local businesses and practitioners to the NAN program. Applicants with a background and/or interest in marketing and sales are preferred but not necessary. Having an interest in/passion for natural health and green living is a plus.
