The mission of Make-A-Wish ® Greater PA and Southern WV is to fulfill the wishes of children between the ages of 2½ and 18 who have a diagnosed life-threatening medical condition,
to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.
I N T E R N S H I P E X P E R I E N C E
As an intern at Make-A-Wish, you are exposed to three facets of a non-profit organization: OUTREACH, DEVELOPMENT, and PROGRAM SERVICES. In addition, you will be asked to perform general office duties. We want you to learn as much as possible while having fun at the same time. Please see the Internship Description on the following page.
L O C A T I O N
The office is located at 1327 Pittston Avenue, Scranton, PA 18505.
The office is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Friday from 9:00 to3:00.
An intern’s hours and days can be flexible within that time frame and may require some additional hours at night and/or weekends for events.
E N V I R O N M E N T
The atmosphere is fun and relaxed, yet busy. We make magic every day. We want to make sure
every child’s wish is superb. In order to make that happen, at times, you will need to juggle multiple tasks at once and meet deadlines. Dress is business casual.
Responsibilities
As an intern at Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia, you are exposed to three facets of a non-profit organization: Outreach, Development, and Program Services. In addition, you will be asked to
perform general office duties.
OUTREACH (Marketing and Communications)
Assist in organizing community relations and outreach programs
Identify and attend community events/health fairs/volunteer fairs relevant to Make-A-Wish
Assist with promotional events
DEVELOPMENT (Fund-raising and Special Events)
Assist the Regional Manager and development team that is responsible for raising funds for children’s wishes
Assist with the Kids for Wish Kids and Wishmakers on Campus fundraising programs
Assist in planning and implementing special events such as golf tournaments, motorcycle runs, haunted houses and recognition events.
-May include attending event planning meetings
- May include assisting at events depending on intern’s availability. Events are usually during weekends or evenings
Make follow-up telephone calls to donors and volunteers (no telemarketing involved).
Learn information about the children’s wishes while writing wish stories for thank you letters.
PROGRAM SERVICES (Wish Granting)
Assist the Wish Assistant in fulfilling children’s wishes including travel, celebrity, occupational, and gift wishes. Tasks may include:
Making travel arrangements and creating itineraries
Researching wish ideas via the Internet and resource library; making telephone calls to donors and vendors
Participating in the fulfillment of gift wishes (for example, shopping sprees) and/or wish parties
Write thank-you letters and follow up correspondence upon the completion of a wish
Plan and participate in wish kid events
Assist with and participate in volunteer activities such as training
Additional projects as assigned or required by the student’s internship program
GENERAL OFFICE DUTIES
Tasks include:
Answering phones/responding to emails
Filing
Updating databases (donor, volunteer, etc.)
Requirements
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Good computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
Ability to interact with families, donors, and volunteers
Ability to multi-task
Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Outgoing and energetic personality
