Perform phlebotomy, order entry, specimen processing and clerical procedures.
Follow patient identification policies prior to performing phlebotomy. Interact with patients and parents to perform procedures. Use appropriate equipment/supplies, holding techniques and know maximum blood draw volumes for age and weight of patient. Perform venepuncture, fingerstick and heelstick including: blood cultures, newborn screens, d-xylose and glucose tolerances, etc. Maintain Kanban system. Use pain management techniques while performing phlebotomy in the outpatient setting. Engage the parent in selecting the appropriate position. Prioritize and transport specimens. Investigate incidents of lost specimens and other problems with the pneumatic tube system. Order and process specimens. Centrifuge, aliquot and label specimens. Verify patient demographic information. Perform specimen order entry and verification. Greet parents and patients; clarify procedures and ask questions to determine needs; listen carefully and provide information. Answer the telephone; transfer calls, issue results, search for tests performed; take orders for test requests. Take responsibility for customer issues or complaints and help provide a solution. Manage phone calls in the Call Center and Defect processing lines. Train new employees and evaluate competency of other staff in the performance of phlebotomy, order entry, clerical and computer functions, centrifugation, labeling and other procedures.
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of routine laboratory operations and medical terminology required. The ability to operate a PC and general office equipment; use a centrifuge, pneumatic tube system and sphygmomanometer. Demonstrates good phlebotomy and excellent customer service skills.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; minimum twelve (12) months phlebotomist experience.
