Nonprofit organization seeks Public Policy Intern. The organization is an innovator on the forefront of working with the public, private, philanthropic and community sectors to advance environmental sustainability and global smart growth. This nonprofit’s mission is sustainable development of low income urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods. The organization is a leader in equitable community development and federal public policy. Programs address environmental quality, public health and energy public policy; policy advocacy; stakeholder education and capacity building; technical assistance and training; community outreach and engagement. We address the needs of low income, vulnerable and sensitive populations regarding issues such as greening the built environment; public engagement in municipal and regional planning; governmental investments; and liaison with federal and state officials on sustainability public policy.
The Intern will work with our staff on a range of sustainable economic development issues including:
•environmental justice
•health disparities
•climate change
•energy efficiency
•renewable energy
•brownfields redevelopment
•smart growth and transportation
•workforce development and jobs
The organization is located one block from Takoma Metro Station in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities
The Public Policy Intern's experiences with the organization will include the following:
•working with staff to develop, promote and implement projects, liaison with elected officials, business leaders, public interest groups, governmental agencies and communities
•research, data collection, analysis drafting, e.g., briefing papers, legislation, reports
•monitoring and tracking policies, laws, regulations, legislation, key activities and events
•oral and written communications, taking and circulating notes, drafting memos, updates
•coordinating and participating in meetings, conference calls and helping to organize events.
Requirements
Core Competencies: We seek an Intern with the following qualifications:
•Educational requirements
o Commitment to an advanced degree in a relevant discipline e.g., public policy, economics, environmental science, community development, law
o Exceptional candidates at the undergraduate level, pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree, will be considered.
•Background in community or economic development, environmental, social, and/or economic justice
•Strong analytical skills, well organized, flexible and effective at multi-tasking
•Excellent writing, outreach and communications skills
•Competent in MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Social Media
•Team savvy, problem solving and political skills.
