We are currently seeking a Research Assistant for the Silver Spring, Maryland area.
Performs studies on bacterial pathogen projects including genotyping of bacterial pathogens and biothreat agents (to include Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis and Brucella species) under biosafety level 2 and 3 conditions based on general directions provided by COR. Assists scientist in preparing DNA samples from biothreat agents in Biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories.
Performs genetic analysis techniques such as PFGE, SNP, VNTR, DNA sequencing and PCR.
Cultures biothreat agents for use in laboratory procedures.
Performs established laboratory tests to identify characteristics of biothreat agents including biochemical reactions, immunoreactivity and plasmid profile.
Follows established protocols to perform DNA and other molecular biology assays.
Organizes and tabulates results of studies and prepares data summaries.
Maintains accurate and appropriate research records.
Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.
Assist in preparation of animal use protocols.
Completes all required safety, biosafety and biosurety training classes.
Obtain required annual serologic tests and occupational physical examinations and required security clearance for entrance into biosafety level 3 laboratories.
Specialized training in new methods and procedures, as needed.
The qualifications for this technician include a BS or BA degree in biology or related field and four (4) years previous experience as a laboratory technologist versed in the basic principles of sterile microbiological and tissue culture technique, molecular biology techniques and the knowledge of operation of basic laboratory equipment.
Must have experience in growth of bacterial cells and in basic laboratory molecular biology techniques for analyzing DNA. Appropriate employment experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
Must have BSL-3 experience.
Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training.
