Description
CHHD has opportunities for interns passionate about international development and global mental health programs. In the USA (Harrisonburg VA) interns assist staff with either office tasks, or with project development or research questions related to well water needs in a Congo village, the comparative costs of psychotropic medications in Central American countries, developing a Global Mental Health poster, grant research for international programs such as family mental health programs, or contributing to lit review research on best practices in international mental health. Hours are flexible, 2-5 hrs/week. Positions are unpaid volunteer. IN EL SALVADOR, we have a fulltime minimum 3-month volunteer internship available through our partner agency ACISAM working with families and persons with mental illness. While challenging, the Salvadoran volunteer experience is an amazing learning experience and very satisfying work. Interns must be fluent in Spanish and able to raise 100% of their own funds. Living costs are low in El Salvador. Contact SamuelNickels at yahoo.com to discuss cost estimate, work details, and whether it's a good fit for you.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities vary according to tasks: research searches on the web, website improvements, searching data bases for research articles, phone and live interviews with experts who have information we need, creatively finding places to dig up information, searching grant databases and making recommendations to staff, writing sections of grant proposals, etc. EL SALVADOR INTERNSHIP responsibilities vary, but would likely include participating in a Saturday psychosocial group of persons with mental illnesses in San Salvador, supporting families in their peer education work, helping families in crisis link up with appropriate services, etc. Bilingual skills required for placement in Central America.
Requirements
Interest in international issues; a passion to make a difference; attention to detail; ability to responsibly work independently. MUST live in Harrisonburg VA area and be able to visit our office downtown Harrisonburg. Your own laptop is also necessary for work, since all staff use their own computers in the office. Bilingual skills a plus (Spanish) but not necessary. Volunteer positions are limited in number, as our staff is small, and often full. Please inquire to see if there are openings.
