DescriptionResponsible for improving several companies' organic search results. Creates and launches SEO campaigns, identifies areas of improvement, runs PPC campaigns, and attempts to improve the clients' sites' rankings in major search engines.
ResponsibilitiesReview and analyze client sites for areas that need to improved, deleted, or revised.
Prepare detailed strategy reports.
Identify the least expensive but most powerful and profitable keywords for client sites.
Run pay-per-click campaigns.
Improve a company's organic search results.
Write effective headlines, body copy, and websites.
Ensure websites are filled with optimal keywords.
Place keywords appropriately in copy to gain most search engine traffic.
Write effective call-to-action statements.
Write original, powerful SEO content for blogs and websites.
Implement off-page SEO content strategies such as coding.
Effectively use header tags.
Keep abreast of white hat and black hat tactics so as not to violate search engine guidelines.
Strategize ways to improve and track site performance.
Compile and present SEO performance reports.
Adjust PPC campaigns as needed.
Consult with independent web designers to improve the navigation of a site to enhance its search engine ranking.
Utilize basic programming and web design skills to enhance SEO.
Create advanced SEO strategies.
Evaluate product offering, traffic, landing page quality, content, design, security, payment options, shipping options, demographics of prospective customers when determining keywords and campaigns.
RequirementsWebsite Analysis: Review and analyze client sites for areas that need to improved, deleted, revamped, etc.; prepare detailed SEO strategy reports.
Keyword Analysis, Research & Copywriting: In-depth knowledge of keyword research. This includes knowing how to identify the least inexpensive, yet most profitable keywords for client sites – whether they are running a pay per click (PPC) campaign, or want to improve their organic search results.
SEO Copywriting: This includes the aforementioned keyword research, as well as SEO writing guidelines, eg, where to place keywords in copy so that it gets the most SE traffic, how to write effective headlines and how to write effective call-to-action statements.
SEO specialists are also responsible for creating (or overseeing the creation) of original SEO content for client sites, in addition to implementing off-page SEO content strategies like coding (eg, when and how to effectively use header tags (ie, H1, H2, H3)).
Search Engine Guidelines: Keeps abreast of white hat and black hat tactics so as not to run afoul of search engine guidelines.
Liaison: SEO specialists liaise with many different departments and professionals, inside their own company, with the client company and with independent contractors.
For example, they may work with the client’s SEO point person to strategize ways to improve and track site performance; they may compile reports for their company’s management; and they may consult with independent web designers to improve the navigation of a site so as to enhance its search engine ranking.
Technology Skills: A minimum of 1-3 years of web experience is required. Specific skills include knowledge of HTML; CSS; blogging platforms like wordpress; more advanced programming languages as needed; and MS Office.
The SEO specialist will also be expected to know the “language of SEO,” eg, organic search, PPC marketing, CTR, CPC, SEM, ROI, keyword density, long-tail keywords, etc.
Communication Skills: As indicated above in the “Liaison” section, an SEO specialist interacts with many different parties, hence, they must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
Self-Starter: As the position entails so many elements, an SEO specialist should be a self starter; someone who doesn’t require handholding. They should be able to assess a situation, develop a plan, get approval and run with it.
Analytical Thinker: Piggybacking on the last skill, it’s imperative that SEO specialists possess critical thinking and analytical skills. They should be able to readily identify problems and formulate practical solutions.
Cool Headed: The ability to work well under pressure; keep a cool head and demeanor.
