Position: Social Services Intern Department: Senior Services Reports to: Social Services Manager Last Updated: 1 Position Summary: The Social Services Intern will assist Caseworkers with various government programs and other benefit applications. The Intern will observe client intake processes, and also screen clients for potential benefits. The position will learn about different Social Services and government programs available to Hanover Township senior citizens, and pursue training as-needed. Interns may assist or supervise the following programs: Adopt-A-Senior, Caregiver Support Group, Caring for Your Memory Support Group, C-HOPE, Latino Outreach, and others. The position will also work to assist Social Services team with electronic Resource File and ensuring it is up-to-date. The Intern will be responsible for updating housing, home health, handyman, food pantry, home-delivered meals programs, transportation services, and other referral sources. The Intern may also develop a marketing plan for future and current programs. This opportunity may also include making presentations to senior living facilities or other agencies to increase awareness of Social Services offered at Hanover Township. The Intern will be responsible for conducting outreach events, as well as assisting with marketing of programs and services. The position will assist in planning and promotion of Support Groups, special projects, and other Social Services events and programs.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: • Assist caseworkers with various governmental programs and benefit applications. • Provide information and referrals to clients as requested. • Leads and/or assists the Social Services Manager with various Outreach programs at the Senior Center and within the community including, but not limited to: Adopt-A-Senior, Caregiver Support Group, Caring For Your Memory Support Group, C-HOPE, Latino Outreach, and/or others. • Create and implement creative community services projects and/or programs on a monthly basis, as well as publicizing events. • Attend on-going trainings as assigned to enhance knowledge for clients and families. Other Job Functions: • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Social Services Manager

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Ability to recognize seniors in a crisis situation (i.e. Elder Abuse and neglect, suicide) and respond accordingly. • Ability to gather concrete information from clients to identify and resolve problems by connecting with resources or programs in a timely manner. • Patience in working with mature adults who may have limitations/impairment of hearing, vision, mobility or cognition. • Capable of speaking clearly and effectively before groups of clients and answering questions appropriately. • Ability to read and interpret all types of documents including safety rules and regulations, and procedure manuals. • Ability to create and edit reports and correspondence from varied source material using appropriate style and format. • Ability to maintain effective professional relationship with elected officials, staff, residents, and vendors. • Enjoy the company of mature adults and willingness to understand generational gaps and differences, yet maintain professional boundaries at all times Education, Experience, and Computer Skills: • Pursuing bachelor’s or master’s level degree in Social Work, Human Services, or related field. • Must be comfortable with Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. • Bilingual preferred, but not required. Special Requirements: • Willingness to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as needed. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with reasonable accommodations. • Must be able to sit, walk, stand, use fingers in a repetitive motion, twist and turn for long periods of time. • The position may require some light lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of up to 20 pounds. • May require the operation of a motor vehicle. Environmental Conditions: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job with reasonable accommodations. • This position is primarily executed indoors. However, it may require contact with outdoor weather at special event activity participation. • Contact with low noise levels common in an indoor working environment. Moderate noise levels may be experienced during certain activities. Time Commitment: • Fifteen or more hours per week. There is a 12-week minimum commitment for our internships.
