Description of the Program/Site: The Center for Urban Community Services, a national leader in the development of effective housing and service initiatives for homeless people, invites applications for a Summer Internship position at the CUCS’ Harlem Transitional Services. HTS provides chronically street homeless individuals with mental illness and/or substance abuse assistance in obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. The program includes the 40- bed Kelly Transitional Living Community and the Housing Placement Center. The Housing First/Harm Reduction Model is used to engage people who otherwise may not accept services.
The Kelly Transitional Living Community is seeking a summer intern to assist with the following responsibilities: Developing a resource bank for vocational and recreational activities for the residents of the Kelly and assisting with site tours and enrollment for the programs that are identified; Coaching residents on shopping, budgeting, and the management of their Activities of Daily Living; facilitating recreational groups/outings; and escorting residents to housing, medical or entitlement appointments.
What can the Intern expect to learn?
This internship will give interns entry into the field of client centered social service provision. They will learn the skills needed to engage the clientele at the program. They will learn strategies for accessing the public resources available to the clients. They will also learn to advocate for the client service needs.
Responsibilities
Below are some ideas for Summer Internship tasks:
• Client Escorts for benefits, appointments, etc
• Co-facilitating a group such as Life Skills, ADLs, Art, etc
• Taking minutes at meetings
• Writing psychosocials
• Completing a 2010 E housing applications
• Outreach to Landlords/Brokers to seek potential housing
• Job Development
• Creating an electronic resource file
• Interview clients for their feedback and presentfindings in a staff meeting
• Interview clients to ask how the program could work better for them
Requirements
All candidates must be an undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited college
Must be willing to work 21 hours week, 3 days a week
? Background or studying in Public Health, Sociology, Human Services or other related fields.
? Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
? Have excellent writing skills and must submit a writing sample

Interns will be supervised by a program social worker, and will be given transportation for field travel for the duration of the internship.
