CUCS, The Prince George The Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) is a pioneer in creating comprehensive, effective housing and service programs for homeless and low-income people, primarily single adults, particularly those suffering from serious mental illness, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and other disabling conditions. Since its inception at Columbia University in 1979, CUCS has also worked to improve public policy affecting the homeless and dispossessed. Thousands of formerly homeless people have found independence and rebuilt their lives with the help of CUCS' programs and services. The Center for Urban Community Services invites applications for 4 summer internship positions at The Prince George. The Prince George, located in midtown Manhattan, is a 416 unit SRO supportive housing residence for low income tenants, many of whom have histories of mental illness, homelessness, substance abuse, and /or HIV/AIDS. The summer intern will be an active participant on the core social services team at the Prince George.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities: The case manager summer intern will develop a well informed view of the many facets of the Social Work profession. Interns will have the opportunity to interact directly with a multidisciplinary team of social workers, psychiatrists, and nursing professionals to provide services to and learn about the special needs populations. Each intern will receive weekly task supervision to further their learning experience, and will also have the opportunity to attend other CUCS trainings and events. The intern will participate in and assist a team of case managers with the following needs including: tenant outreach and engagement, assisting tenants schedule and coordinate medical and psychiatric care and treatment as well as escorting tenants to their appointments. Summer interns will also develop case management skills including learning about entitlements and benefits and will be expected to support staff in organizing and maintaining tenant’s charts. Summer interns may also develop a tenant group with one of our onsite medical or psychiatric providers in a liaison capacity.

Requirements

Requirements: • Undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited college • Willingness to work 21 hours week, 3 days a week • Ability to be a good team player • Possess a desire to learn and a commitment to make a contribution to the organization • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Excellent writing skills • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software • Applicant is required to submit a writing sample • Qualified applicants must submit application to Brian O'Hare at bohare@cucs.org
