DescriptionUrban Sustainability Solutions is seeking a small team of enthusiastic, motivated candidates who are interested in learning about sustainability principles and how they are applied to the business setting, with a sub-focus on healthcare.
This position will offer practical experience and relevant insight into various aspects of a local healthcare system’s sustainability program. It will allow for increased understanding of the behind-the-scenes operations of a hospital, as well as the chance to get hands-on experience in the development of new projects and initiatives targeting a range of sustainability subject areas. This position also offers the opportunity to work alongside leaders in the rapidly-emerging field of healthcare sustainability. It is a very exciting opportunity for young, motivated professionals interested in directly contributing to the evolution of the healthcare or sustainability industries.
Work will be based in our Falls Church office, with an option of telecommuting on occasion. This position requires 15-20 hours of commitment per week during the semester.
ResponsibilitiesThis position will directly support a major healthcare system’s sustainability team on a variety of internal projects. Within this position, there are opportunities to work on both the strategic and technical sides of the sustainability field. The specific types of projects will vary based on the experience, knowledge and interests of the candidate.
The individual filling this role will help plan, implement and support a wide range of initiatives targeting the healthcare system’s core sustainability focus areas: waste, energy, water, environmentally preferable purchasing, alternative transportation, sustainable foods, green construction and green IT. Some of our past projects in these areas have included developing a lighting survey, researching environmentally preferable healthcare products and writing a sustainable foods cookbook. Previous knowledge of or familiarity with any of these areas is encouraged though not necessary to successfully fill this position, as a core component of the work will involve researching these areas.
RequirementsStrong research skills with demonstrated experience (either through coursework or extracurricular activities; please provide a 1-2 page writing sample)
Think-outside-the-box mentality which lends itself to developing new programs and identifying untapped opportunities
Ability to multi-task while successfully maintaining a tight schedule
Team player who thrives when working with others
Motivated self-starter who will take initiative for their work but not be afraid to ask questions
Microsoft Office software experience
Knowledge of sustainability principles a plus
Positive and enthusiastic attitude a MUST
