Description

The goals of our youth summer activities for refugee youth are to help refugee students in their cultural adjustment process by offering enrichment activities, socialization events, and new field trip experiences; provide opportunities for students to have mentor-like relationships with caring adults; and provide opportunities for further academic development. An intern with World Relief Refugee Youth Services will have the opportunity to work in a cross-cultural environment, learn about the refugee resettlement process, and experience the dynamics of working with refugee youth.

Responsibilities

• Help organize and attend various weekly club sessions and other activities for refugee students (an intern
can focus on certain activities in which to participate/facilitate based on interest and need)
• Interact with and support program volunteers
• Help oversee program functions
• Design age and culturally-appropriate arts/crafts and/or recreation activities
• Develop appropriate, mature, and caring relationships with refugee children, youth, and families
• Recruit and remind student participants about activities through phone calls and home visits
• Drive student participants to/from club sessions and on field trip activities
• Conduct home visits to communicate with parents about upcoming activities, student concerns, etc.
• Provide assistance with ongoing services: immunizations for students, school registrations, and orientation
sessions
• Help with office work: creating flyers, reporting services on an access database, filing, keeping attendance
records, etc.
• Other tasks as assigned by Youth Services staff
• Weekly summary reports
• Required readings and reflective journal entries

Requirements

• Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
• Strong inter-personal, communication, and leadership skills
• Cross-cultural experience and/or interest
• Interest in working with children and youth, experience preferred
• Organized, attention to detail, ability to coordinate various components of a project
• Strong personal initiative, ability to work independently, flexibility, and creativity
• Car and valid driver’s license; Willingness and ability to transport students in 15 passenger vans and
personal vehicles
