Job Description
Overview Performs construction planning, permitting, installation, adjustment, replacement, and routine and episodic maintenance on plumbing, piping, sewer, medical gas, fire mains, and associated equipment and systems. Performs routine/episodic maintenance on other hospital equipment and systems to provide the continuity of care required to meet the goals and objectives of St Vincent's Hospital.

Responsibilities Plumbing (75%)
  • Perform episodic and routine maintenance tasks on hospital equipment and systems to provide an efficient and effective environment for the hospital's healing ministry
  • Receive maintenance work orders from the Engineering Project Manager or the PM Clerk
  • Prepare tools and supplies required to accomplish the assigned work orders in a timely manner
  • Perform the assigned maintenance tasks in a timely manner
  • Generate work orders on problems that are beyond the scope of the immediate job or time frame
  • Recommend for purchase the appropriate parts required to effect repairs
  • Maintain control of designated Engineering stocks and supplies
  • Recommend for purchase the appropriate parts required to effect repairs
  • Recommend the purchase of materials to replace expended stock items, carefully avoiding overstocking
  • Notify supervisor when a problem or its repair will affect utility services or impact patient care
  • Make repairs in a manner that will least likely affect patient care
  • Perform installation, start-up and initial acceptance review of new equipment and installations
  • Plan and perform work requiring specialized knowledge of plumbing principals, wiring specifications, and codes and standards
  • Provide training to Engineering department associates on plumbing issues and concerns
General Maintenance (25%)
  • Performs routing maintenance tasks such as:
    • Assisting the electrician with troubleshooting, repairs, and installation of new services
    • Assist zone mechanics in maintaining their areas of responsibility
    • Maintains and repairs all plumbing, waste, drain, medical gas, closed water and steam systems
    • Troubleshooting, repairing and installing existing and new piping systems as required
    • Assisting the carpenter with installation and repair of such items as doors, windows, screens, locks, etc. as needed
    • Assisting with any plastering, bricklaying or concrete work as needed
    • Assisting in other areas of the department such as boiler room or may assist painters as needed
    • Picking up various supplies, parts, and building materials and delivers to appropriate location as required
    • Replacing bulbs as needed and/or makes necessary repairs to fixtures; repairing various types of electrical cards, cleaning fixtures on a regular basis
    • Plunging toilets and drains when necessary
    • Repairing patient electrical and mechanical beds
    • Servicing and repairing exhaust fans
    • Repairing of steam leaks, traps, strainers, and check valves
    • Servicing, greasing, and repairing fan motors and air handling units
    • Replacing fan belts and adjusting as necessary
    • Soldering, brazing and welding materials
    • Repairing flush valves
    • Repairing gas and oxygen leaks
    • Service and repairs to dietary equipment
    • Servicing and repairing pump and motors in various areas of the hospital facility
    • Checking, adjusting and repairing humidifiers on air handling systems
    • Maintaining sterilizers
    • Assisting with the repair of fire doors
    • Assisting with the installation of locks and doors
    • Replacing fuses and resetting circuit breakers
    • Performing filter changes on air handling units
    • Inspecting and repairing handrails and grab-bars
    • Replacing toilet seats
    • Cleaning work and shop areas
    • Checking and replacing defective nurse call pendants
    • Repairing parking lot gates
    • Assisting in roof repairs
    • Monitoring and repairing the pneumatic tube system
    • Key and install door locks

Qualifications Education and Work Experience
  • High school diploma required
  • Graduate of a technical school in a plumbing program preferred
  • Five years' experience in commercial building maintenance work including three years plumbing experience, and able to read blueprints
  • Healthcare facility maintenance experience preferred
  • Current Journeyman Plumbing card required
  • Within the scope of the job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
  • Review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and solve practical problems.
  • Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: interpret resulting data; standards for design and construction; building codes and regulations; hazards and safety precautions.
