Job Description

Utility Construction Operator

An Underground Utility Construction Operator will primarily be responsible for operating heavy machinery and horizontal drilling equipment utilized for boring and trenching activities in underground utilities construction. This position requires use of good judgement in the operation of duties and detailed attention to work activities. A person in this position is responsible for complying with all safety requirements.

Essential Requirements:

  • Operate heavy construction equipment and horizontal directional bore drilling for installation of underground conduit in city and rural areas.

  • Responsible for mud mixing activities necessary for drill operations

  • Operate horizontal drill through engineer designed paths paying close attention to potential obstacles

  • Proactively understand designed pathways, potential obstacles and safety issues

  • React responsibly to unknown obstacles and circumstances using good judgement and decision making

  • Assist other equipment operators by signaling safe movement of equipment

  • May operate light, small engine equipment and other equipment as necessary

  • May perform other manual duties in support of underground construction project

  • Operate motor vehicles to and from job sites

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the utilities construction field

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the operation of construction equipment and horizontal bore drills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the operation of tools and equipment in support of underground utility construction activities

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of engineered bore paths and potential obstacles

  • Must have an understanding of job hazards and precautions necessary on the job site

  • Demonstrated work ethic and priority for job safety

  • Strong verbal communication skills

  • Must be able to perform work in a various conditions and weather elements

  • Valid Commercial (Class-A) Driver’s License
