Moon River Senior Care and Transportation
1900 Campus Commons Drive, Suite 100
PLEASE APPLY ONLY IF YOU WILL BE RESIDING IN NORTHERN VIRGINA THIS SUMMER. Our agency, Moon River Senior Care and Transportation, offers a valuable Pre-Health Service Learning internship for individuals exploring or pursuing careers in healthcare. The internship offers direct care experience with older adults in a home and a community setting and training in geriatrics and general patient care.
Our company owner has helped prepare 225 interns for careers in health care. The experience has opened doors to medical school, nursing, social work, public health, occupational/physical therapy and other undergraduate and graduate programs. Former interns are attending, or have graduated from, top-ranked medical and nursing schools, including Duke University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Wake Forest University.
Interns gain direct geriatric care experience and develop strong interpersonal and leadership skills. They learn about medical conditions, including cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, mild cognitive impairments, Alzheimer’s disease, respiratory conditions, post-stroke aphasia, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, visual and hearing impairments, limited mobility and chronic pain.
The interns also serve as drivers/escorts for clients having outpatient surgery or going to routine medical appointments. They gain understanding of pre-surgery preparation and post-surgery recovery. Interns must have a vehicle in good operating condition and a clean driving record the past three years.
In addition, interns learn about family dynamics and the joys and challenges of aging. As a future health care provider, students gain understanding of the patient perspective and will be able to offer their patients higher quality care because of the experience. Interns also learn the importance of patient advocacy and how to appropriately advocate for a client.
The internship may include academic credit, but it is up to the student to initiate the process with his or her academic institution. Former interns have received course credit from the School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Departments of Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Education, Anthropology, Journalism and Mass Communication for successfully completing an internship working with older adults.
The requirements for internships include:
a) Completion of 30 hours of training in patient care provided by Moon River and community partners and through participation in approved web training sessions and independent study.
b) Working a minimum of 150-200 hours with clients in the home setting (paid) and at a local adult day care center (unpaid).
c) submission of a 3-5 page reflection paper
d) 7 minute presentation to other interns on approved topic.
We are seeking caring, responsible individuals who have a genuine interest in working with older adults.
ResponsibilitiesCompanion care, medication reminders, home organization, sorting, calendar management, meal preparation, light housekeeping and engagement in meaningful activities. Interns also may provide respite for family caregivers and gain understanding of the physical and emotional toll of providing 24/7 care for a loved one.
Interns will provide direct care in the home setting and work at an adult day care program located in Fairfax, Virginia, assisting with activities for individuals with cognitive impairments. Client assignments in the home will be in Ashburn, VA and surrounding communities.
Advocacy at medical appointments and the ability to document physician directives is critical.
Attentiveness to detail in providing medical reminders and the ability to take the initiative are very important to be a strong candidate for this internship. We will accept up to 8 interns.
RequirementsCandidates must have a genuine desire to learn more about older adults. We are seeking individuals with a strong work ethic who are reliable and responsible.
