Internship Overview: The Employment and Education Department (NEXUS program) of Tierra del Sol is currently seeking an intern interested in gaining skills in social work and non-profit sector. NEXUS is a post high school transition program offering a “college to career and community life” path for young adults with disabilities NEXUS assists young adults who are exiting high school to identify and pursue their dreams to go to college and ultimately to transition successfully into the career of their choice.

Grad students pursuing a MSW are strongly encouraged to apply.

Interested applicants must submit cover letter of interest, current resume along with a completed Graduate Student Internship Application. Only completed applications will be considered.

Compensation: This internship is unpaid and compensated with skills development, acquisition of knowledge, and/or course credit from a college or university. This internship does not include medical benefits. Tierra del Sol Foundation is a wonderful environment filled with welcoming and compassionate personnel. As a Tierra del Sol intern you will learn to develop art activities conducive to learning, curriculum implementation, and how to work with a variety of people with special needs. Our interns develop new skills, more confidence, and a greater understanding of special needs education, invaluable personal and professional development.


Basic MSW internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-Travel to our different field sites including Pierce, Mission, and Valley Colleges
-Work closely with the Area Manager to give tours of Valley College. Take notes and type up observations
-Review monthly client packets for accuracy and completion. Highlight any issues deemed “critical” in the comments sheet
-Check in with different coaches and clients to make sure all items on AM checklist have been brought in
-Transportation Support: Travel with a group of students and coaches from Van Nuys or Regional Center back to Valley College
-File quality control
-Make suggestions and area of improvement notes on current client schedules
-Deliver schedules, meet with coaches, and attend area meetings
-Help Area Manager prepare for college site meetings
-Enter ID notes, Volunteer hours, and updated contact information into Database
-Gather documents needed for intra-agency referral meetings and assist manager with updating/transitioning files
-Suggest different ways to follow up on requests for services with Area manager.


Requirements and Desired Qualities: Applicants should have good communications skills, work well with others, and have an abundance of patience. The individual who is selected for this internship will need to to pass a DOJ LiveScan background check and TB test.

The intern is expected to commitment to a set schedule, 15-20 hours per week, 3-5 days per week, with a minimum 6-month commitment. Our program hours are 8am to 2:00pm, Monday thru Friday. We have flexibility within these times for the selected individual to intern with us.

Applicants must have an affable disposition and an interest in helping adults with developmental disabilities.
