Description

Strength United relies on a unique team of dedicated volunteers working daily as rape crisis advocates, counselors and prevention educators. Volunteers are essential to the mission of the center and provide direct services to clients.

Last year, volunteers answered 900 calls to our 24-hour hotline, accompanied 609 adults and children to forensic medical examinations for sexual assault, and conducted individual, group and family therapy with over 1,000 individuals and families.

As a community-based organization, we rely on volunteers to promote and sustain our ongoing crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy, education and prevention programs.

The rewards of volunteering for Strength United are many: helping people in crisis, working to end violence, receiving on-going training and supervision, educating the public about important social issues, assisting a long-standing community organization, and receiving state certification as a Sexual Assault Advocate.

Responsibilities

Assist in providing crisis intervention to survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Sexual Assault Counselor Advocates will be placed on a 6.5 hour shift once a week. We are understanding of your work and school schedule, therefore, we make every attempt at being flexible with your schedule. Every week you will rotate the position you have during your scheduled shift. One week you will be on hotline, the other on accompaniment, or you may be placed on back-up shift. As a Sexual Assault Counselor Advocate, you will be responsible for providing emotional support as well as providing referrals to the community. If you are on the hotline, this will be completed via phone; if you are on accompaniment, you will do this in person at our Family Justice Center; and, as back-up, you may be doing both. Whether you are on hotline, accompaniment, or back-up, it is a very rewarding experience!

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age, and must have a clear background. Driving to our Family Justice Center, located in Van Nuys, CA, will also be required.
