Description

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded by FDR in 1938, the March of Dimes funds community programs, advocacy efforts, research, education, and family support services.

The Public Affairs Intern is responsible for assisting the Massachusetts Chapter in advocating for public policy supporting women and children. The intern will assist with the annual state public affairs plan/budget, track updates on key bills identified as March of Dimes priorities, and increase awareness and support of March of Dimes issues among the Governor and key state policy makers. This volunteer position offers the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on public affairs experience as well as advocacy for a non-profit organization. University/college credit is available. All internships are located at the Westboro, MA office.

Responsibilities

Annual State Public Affairs Plan
•Assist with development, implementation, and evaluation of an annual state public affairs plan/budget focusing on foundation-wide public affairs priorities
•Track, analyze, and disseminate updates on key bills identified as March of Dimes priorities

Communication with State Policy Makers
•Coordinate and maintain a resource list of volunteers and staff who have access to members of Congress, US Senators, the Governor, state legislature and officials
•Act as a gatekeeper for internal clearance policies to ensure that the March of Dimes speaks with one voice to convey a consistent message to state policymakers

March of Dimes Awareness and Support
•Increase awareness and support of March of Dimes issues among the Governor and key state policy makers
•Prepare effective and concise support materials and training (fact sheets, speaking points, briefings, position papers, testimonies) for use by volunteers at key public affairs activities

Chapter Communication
•Work with the Director of Program Services to communicate regularly with the chapter and division lead public affairs staff and boards of directors on public affairs issues and activities
•Conduct appropriate follow-up and action steps after communicating issues with the appropriate parties

Real World Experience
•Attend chapter events such as Board Meetings, fundraisers, and kick-off events
•Create materials needed for various chapter events
•Work on actual projects that affect the foundation and its fundraising efforts
•Collaborate with fellow interns and March of Dimes staff to achieve best results for Chapter
