Description

Our lab investigates the molecular biology of melanoma. This is a translational medicine-oriented lab which includes investigation of patient samples from our clinic for research. We look at the genetics and mechanisms involved in cancer and treatments. Interns would learn alongside physicians and other professionals in a laboratory setting in isolating nucleic acids and other cell components for analysis towards discovering new and useful information leading to treatment and diagnosis. We are interested in an individual with computer language skills (especially python), comfort with statistics, and interested in applying to medical school in the near future. This is a great work environment for long term contact with physicians and cutting-edge research-- some patient contact possible as well.

Responsibilities

Candidate would learn and perform: computer script writing in python for bioinformatics, experiments related to: PCR, next generation sequencing, RNA transcript analysis, growth characteristics of cells in culture, microscopy, microdissection, extraction of nucleic acids, analysis of data from above, clinical aspects of melanoma and a variety of other tests.

Requirements

Candidate should be a college graduate (or near graduate) planning on entering medical school. The commitment would be 20 hours/week for 1 year. The ideal candidate has a strong academic record, and an ability to focus on complex tasks and theory. Interest in working in lab environment is essential. The internship requires dedication to detail, record keeping, judgement and average to good dexterity for executing experiments. Knowlege of computer language (especially python) and familarity with statistics is desired.
