About the Company:

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Reel Gardening is a for profit, social enterprise that has developed a unique seed system that can be grown into a vegetable or herb garden in nearly any climate. The company has/has had business partnerships and/or work with Unilever, Richard Branson, Coca-Cola, Sappi, Exclusive Books, Total, Chartered Wealth Solutions, and others.

About the Internship:

This is a semester-long, unpaid internship. For international candidates, college credit arrangements are encouraged. Housing/accommodations and travel expenses are expected to be shouldered by the candidate.


Reel Gardening will accept applications on a rolling basis, however interviews (Skype or Google Hangout) for this position are expected to held on May 19 and May 20. Start date will be determined by Reel Gardening and the selected candidate. Reel Gardening seeks interns for summer, fall and spring semesters.


Scope of Work:

Reel Gardening has developed a pilot project that will test our hypothesis on commercially viable, small scale, community growing projects and that will determine the conditions necessary to establish sustainable community gardens. We have one pilot confirmed in Cape Town with a local partner and are in discussions with two further partners for pilots in Johannesburg and Durban as well.

Reel Gardening requires an intern to oversee these projects, with day-to-day management, with the goal to developing a case study. S/he will be working closely with a Reel Gardening partner as well as the community that the garden will be established in. They will observe the hiring process, the garden establishment and training, the garden maintenance and care, the relationship between the selected garden carers, the sale of the vegetables, the relationship with the buyer, etc. The intern will be involved in all aspects of the project, from social facilitation to select the correct people to pilot with, to data collection and reporting.
