Piaggio Fast Forward (piaggiofastforward.net) is a new technology and design company established by the Piaggio Group, the manufacturers of Vespa, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Derbi and several other scooter, motorcycle and commercial vehicle brands. Our goal is the development of smart mobility platforms for a world in which city navigation and short-distance transportation are rapidly changing. Led by an interdisciplinary team of innovators drawn from the top ranks of the technology, design, and engineering fields, the company is committed to building light and autonomous mobility platforms that provide innovative solutions to the movement of people and goods.
About the role
We’re looking for a research intern to help us 1) keep up to date regarding the markets we’re planning to sell our products into and 2) research potential markets we may want to go into. The role will involve qualitative (field study, human centered design/design thinking) as well as quantitative research (locating and sometimes analyzing statistics, trends, market analyses). You’ll have the opportunity to directly interface with potential customers as well as research various expansion opportunities. Ideally you’re someone who likes to understand why someone desires a certain product as much of what we do is centered around creating a delightful solution for our customers.
Immediate start is ideal though we're open to a later start date. This is a rolling internship so we'll need people throughout the year. You must work out of our offices at Greentown Labs and be able to work at least 15 hours per week (max 30). Beginning March 1, we'll be based by Sullivan Square at 56 Roland street.
ResponsibilitiesYou'll be the main research intern, working directly with our Head of Design Research. Because we are a nimble 10-person team, you are likely to have the opportunity to work with everyone. You'll help with research and occasionally with design. Some specific items include:
• Desk-based research– this may include looking up details regarding drones, robots, delivery vehicles, scooters, bikes, wearables, various forms of commuter transportation, shopping experiences of purchasing vehicles and more
• Help plan field research/human-centered design research and associated visits (travel and meeting planning). This research is focused on the human side of problems we are working on to help identify pain points and criteria for an effective and delightful solution for potential consumers
• Organize data and insight in a user-friendly way that is accessible to our team
• Create presentations that succinctly synthesize key insights emerging from the research
• Aid our design team with research regarding new mobility solutions and send out a weekly update with findings about what is happening in the sector of wearables and lightweight mobility
RequirementsWe're looking for someone with a love of transportation systems and a genuine curiosity in how people move. Bonus if you get excited about what makes some ways of moving around (including materials used to make things and to keep people safe) inherently more desirable than others.
You probably have a degree in a behavioral field (psychology, behavioral economics, marketing, business, statistics) or can demonstrate high competency in applied behavioral research through previous work. You have excellent written and verbal communications skills, are highly organized and have impeccable attention to detail. You are interested in learning the inner workings of a company and enjoy being a team player. You must be a self-starter, highly analytical, can follow instructions well when needed, diligent with deadlines and be able to manage multiple projects. You have great research skills and are comfortable with an entrepreneurial mindset (you are not daunted by the challenges of applying research in the real world). You have the mental fluidity to move across domains as diverse as vehicles, patterns in human behavior, and novel materials (and enjoy this!).
Any most importantly, you’re excited to be part of something big! Basic knowledge of the Microsoft office suite required; basic understanding of statistical packages, human centered design methods, and Adobe Suite a bonus.
