Editorial/Web Intern

Performer MagazineSomerville, MA
Performer Magazine is dedicated to promoting and supporting local, independent, grassroots, small label and unsigned bands. We enjoy nationally known artists, but our focus is helping our bands reach that level. In short, we want to cover interesting artists before they blow up. We are currently seeking college students for our in-house internship program. Youll work in-office and report to our editor to pitch and receive assignments, craft stories, report on your local scene and represent the magazine at events in your area. You'll also be getting hands-on experience by assisting in the editing, proofreading, design layout and social media aspects of putting together each monthly print issue. When working on a piece, remember that you are writing from the musicians point of view. Its very important to always keep that audience in mind. For example, when writing about a venue, think about it the point of view of an artist performing there, not how it would be to see a show there. Though minimum writing requirements are listed below, further writing opportunities exist for interns who wish to contribute more. Never hesitate to pitch story ideas. 1. News: Intern will be responsible for generating one or two stories on their local scene each month. Possibilities include venue/studio/label profiles, interviews with people in the scene and general coverage of music happenings in the local community. 2. Record reviews: at least one a month. If the records arent pitched by the intern and accepted by the editor, they will be assigned. 3. Live reviews: attend and review at least two shows a month. If the shows arent pitched by the intern and accepted by the editor, they will be assigned. One review per month will be for consideration in the print mag. The other reviews can be shorter and included on the website. Live Events Music festivals and Performer Presents: one event per month. Intern will be responsible for promoting the monthly Performer Presents event in their area (if applicable), being a presence at the show that night, distributing mags, taking photos, gathering mailing list signups and hanging banners. Other data entry duties may be assigned as well. Please send resume, cover letter and 1-2 short writing samples to editorial@performermag.com
