Summer 2013 Education Intern

For more than three decades, the Octagon has steadfastly worked to make the arts more accessible to the general public. We enhance people's lives by encouraging individual creativity, spirit, and potential. The Octagon continues to contribute to the quality of life and economic growth of the Ames community by making it a more livable and prosperous place. The Octagon serves more than 30,000 people annually though education classes and outreach programs, rotating exhibits, retail gallery shop, and special evets such as the annual Festival of Trees and the Octagon Art Festival. The success of the Octagon relies heavily on the support of its members and volunteers. Interns will play a pivotal role in the daily operations and tasks of the organization. The Summer 2013 Education intern will assist the Education Director with researching, planning, preparing and executing eight summer art camps for children grades 1st-6th. The internship will begin in the beginning of June, and will endure through late August. The intern will be expected to provide a minimum of 10 working hours per week. There will be preliminary orientation training, followed by any additional instruction deemed necessary by supervisor. The intern will also be given weekly meetings with their supervisor, the Education Dirctor, for guidance and instruction. This is a partially paid position. Payment will be given for preparation days only (not for contact hours with campers.) Payment is $25.00 per day, not to exceed $600 for the summer. Payment will be given only if hours are fulfilled and necessary work is completed.

The Spring 2013 Exhibits intern will assist the Exhibits Manager with the ongoing inventorying, cataloging, organizing, researching and digitizing of the collections. The intern will also provide a supporting role in the planning, publicizing, and installing of the annual Masters of Fine Art Candidate and High School Exhibitions. The internship will begin in the beginning of March, and will endure through late May. The intern will be expected to provide a minimum of 10 working hours per week. There will be preliminary orientation training, followed by any additional instruction deemed necessary by supervisor. The intern will also be given weekly meetings with their supervisor, the Exhibits Manager, for guidance and instruction. This is an unpaid position, though we regularly work with institutions to fulfill internship credit requirements.

Job Description:


The Summer Intern will work in theLinux Systems Programming: Communication Services department.  The Linux Systems Programming team has Global responsibility for the configuration and support of all IP addresses, hostnames, and Domain Name resolution.   The student will responsible for the following:



  • Participate in live hands on troubleshooting for the DNS/DHCP infrastructure

  • Leverage MS Office for manipulating/converting data to .xml format

  • Perform and execute System testing for internally developed Web Service

  • Perform and execute system configuration changes using IPAM database GUI

  • Managerial/Leadership work activities

    • Attend and facilitate technical/business meetings generate meeting summaries

    • Perform specific system configuration audits

    • Create new and update existing configuration/support documentation

    • Update existing SharePoint site

    • Weekly data mining and analysis of:

      • I.S. Notifies

      • HDFS logs

      • Ad hoc Incidents






The successful Summer Intern will have worked with or have experience in:



  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel) skills

  • Knowledge for JAVA

  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills

  • Good knowledge of computers and servers Hardware technology

  • Strong analytical and communication skills both oral and written

  • Programming knowledge a plus


TheSummer Intern must be able to work 32-40 during the summer (generally May through August).


Knowledge and Skills:



  • Microsoft Office Suite Intermediate to Advanced (Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel)

  • Good Technical Troubleshooting, Analytical and Communication Skills both oral and written

The Summer Intern will work in the Mainframe Business Capacity Planning department.  The Mainframe Business Capacity Planning team is responsible for sizing mainframe applications future and current initiatives, analyzing statistics to accurately forecast application capacity needs, and coding/automation for the Reporting Services initiative. The student will be responsible for the following:



  • Leverage MS Access or SQL for database creation and management for Reporting Services. Develop macros and automation as needed for this project.

  • Expected to update & create reports using ACCESS, SQL, & EXCEL

  • Good knowledge of pulling data from databases and being able to automate reports

  • Managerial/Leadership work activities

    • Attend technical/business meetings generate meeting summaries

    • Create new and update existing documentation for application meetings, contingency plans, sizing analysis




The successful Intern will have worked with or have experience in:



  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel) skills

  • Knowledge of SQL and SQL Programming

  • Visual Basic Programing

  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills
