Architectural Acoustics Intern

Walter-Storyk Design GroupHighland, NY
The internship program at Walters-Storyk Design Group (WSDG) is a 3 month unpaid program (if your school requires a longer time than 3 months that is a possibility). When a student comes to WSDG he/she is immersed in an office environment that teaches the student skills in critical thinking, problem solving and creative solutions. Students are exposed to all phases of operations from the most basic of office tasks to research, acoustic engineering, architectural design & drafting, client interaction, site visits, lectures, etc. Students even attend our weekly production meetings where they can offer input on the project tasks they have been assigned. Our close proximity to New York City (less than 2 hours by train) allows us to closely work with a dynamic array of clients with equally dynamic acoustical/design needs. Students accompany a staff member into New York City quite often, exposing them to the field operations of WSDG as well as the evolution of a project (consulting, design, construction, installation, and systems design/integration, acoustical testing and studio tuning). Employment after an internship is not guaranteed. However, those who successfully demonstrate the above skills will be considered for available employment opportunities. In addition to opportunities with WSDG, students often meet contacts at architectural firms, recording studios, radio stations, TV stations, advertising companies and other media companies. Students should use these meetings to network and establish business relationships where and when appropriate. We also assist students with finding suitable housing as well as providing them with preparatory materials on what the day-to-day aspects of an internship entail. We realize that students will be away from familiar surroundings and many times coming from another country. This is an exciting opportunity for students to apply their acquired skills in a real world environment that is certain to enhance them and teach new skills as well. However, as with many things, you will only get out of it what you put into it. Students who are willing to learn; seek out learning opportunities; and accept advice on how to improve will find our staff open and eager to teach. The student that is able to successfully achieve this will leave us with more knowledge, practical experience and confidence in their abilities. Although the work we do is serious we try not to take ourselves too seriously. We try to create a professional but fun working environment.
