Intern, Medical Outreach Program

AmeriCaresStamford, CT
INTERN POSITION TITLE: Intern, Medical Outreach Program DEPARTMENT: Medical Outreach Program LOCATION: Stamford, CT ASSIGNMENT LENGTH AND HOURS: This is a summer internship opportunity and runs from June - August. This position requires a minimum commitment of 4 days/ week and consistent attendance to ensure that projects are seen to completion. ABOUT AMERICARES AmeriCares is a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization that delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world and across the United States. Since it was established in 1982, AmeriCares has distributed more than $10 billion in humanitarian aid to 164 countries. POSITION SUMMARY AmeriCares Medical Outreach Program equips U.S.-based volunteer medical teams traveling to some of the most impoverished areas of the world where even basic medical care may be non-existent or inaccessible. They provide a wide range of health care services and have a profound impact on the quality of life and productivity of the people they treat. Medical volunteer teams travel to remote villages to provide primary health care and health education, as well as to urban slums where extreme poverty equally prevents access to care. AmeriCares also supports teams of highly skilled surgeons conducting sophisticated cardiovascular, orthopedic and reconstructive procedures at hospitals that may lack appropriate staff, equipment and other essential resources. All donate their time and expertise to treat people who might otherwise not receive care and to transfer knowledge to strengthen local health care capabilities. Last year, the program provisioned more than 1,050 volunteer medical teams traveling to 83 countries with over $40 million in medical and surgical supplies. The Medical Outreach Program (MOP) is distinguished by the large volume of aid it provides, the direct delivery of products via medical volunteers, and its high impact in a short time frame. More than one hundred requests for medical donations are processed each month involving hundreds of medical professionals and sponsoring organizations, and resulting in thousands of people receiving desperately needed health care. While we have a large body of documentation on these aspects of the program, some thoughtful analysis is needed to learn more about our constituents so we can better serve them and help more people access the health care and medicines they need.
