Industrial Hygienist (Intern)

Job Description

This position is designed to be a short duration (3 months), temporary internship with the possibility of a permanent position once the incumbent graduates from university with a degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health or Safety Management.

  • Performs industrial hygiene exposure monitoring as requested, with an emphasis on Hexavalent Chromium exposures to hand welders in Emission Control plants and chrome plating operators in Ride Control plants. This includes the necessary planning in advance such as selecting the proper sampling and analysis method, procuring the necessary sample collection media.
  • Performs noise exposure surveys using integrated dosimeters at Tenneco plants in the US and Canada.
  • Conducts qualitative exposure assessments using the Tenneco process at various plants.
  • Maintains and calibrates Industrial Hygiene equipment.
  • Writes reports and makes recommendations based on observations and exposure data obtained from completion of quantitative and qualitative exposure assessments and surveys. Identifies and reports on any specific conditions that might represent a violation with Federal or State OSHA regulations.
  • Participates on EHS audit teams as required.
  • Instructs EHS coordinators or assigned technicians on how to perform IH exposure assessments and surveys.
  • Conducts work environment inspections and risk assessments to identify existing or potential safety and health hazards, develops recommendations for corrective actions, and follows-up to ensure actions have been properly implemented.
  • Provides recommendations to plant management regarding potential physical and chemical exposures to health hazards so that they are adequately evaluated and controlled.

Required Skills
  • Bachelors degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental (Public) Health or Safety Management/Engineering.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills ability to clearly communicate with the plant management and hourly workers. Able to present technical information to a broad audience including Business Unit leadership.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and standard Industrial Hygiene practices.
  • Ability to analyze work environment issues, develop and recommend solutions.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Possesses or able to obtain a valid Passport.

Position Description
Engineering Intern for Boeing Huntsville Space and Commercial programs. Boeing Huntsville programs include Boeing Space Exploration and support to the Boeing Commercial Airline 787 Dreamliner design. The Huntsville Design Center and Advanced Design & Prototype Systems are key team members in the design and build process of the 787 and other commercial aircraft. New technologies and processes have been developed to help Boeing and its supplier partners achieve significant efficiency gains. Boeing Space Exploration is a leading provider of human space flight and space exploration systems and services. Space Exploration, a division within Boeing Defense, Space and Security Network and Space Systems business, employs approximately 3,000 people in Alabama, California, Florida and Texas. As NASA defines its roadmap for the future, Boeing will apply its 50 years of experience in human spaceflight to assist NASA as it matures the technologies needed, such as a Space Launch System for crew exploration missions beyond Earth orbit, while leveraging our design work to date on the Ares upper stage rocket and associated avionics. Interns are typically paired with a senior engineer to perform engineering tasks associated with the development and verification of product performance requirements.
-Responsibilities may include:
-a) facilitate resolution of cross-functional technical issues identified by others to ensure optimized solutions; b) assist with the development and maintenance of integrated planning products and associated data gathering; c) assist with the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements management processes and tools; d) provide technical review of the engineering and documentation to establish the design of primary, secondary, installation, assembly, and interface for aerospace structural design products; e) assist with the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes and tools; f) provide engineering support to avionics and mechanical systems definition and design; g) support engineering review of subcontractor specifications and products; h) support system safety analyses; i) support data collection and analysis for reliability calculations.
-REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Experience using MATLAB. Participant or Lead role on an engineering team project. Experience compiling technical data into reports or presentations.
-PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Prior engineering internship on spaceflight and/or missile programs or graduate study research using systems engineering practices. Experience implementing industry standard systems engineering processes and procedures using industry standard tools such as DOORS, Rhapsody, System Architect or phx ModelCenter. Engineering lead position on team project. Training or experience creating system models using SysML. Understanding of drawing standards, drawing and configuration management systems, and producibility principles. Understanding of lean engineering principles. Demonstrated ability to consolidate technical data into reports and presentations and clearly communicate technical information to a variety of audiences. Understanding of architecture frameworks such as DODAF.
