The Center for Aerosol and Nanomaterials Engineering at RTI International is offering a Nanobiotechnology Research Internship for undergraduate and graduate students for Summer 2013. The use of metal oxide nanomaterials in industrial, household, and medicinal products (e.g. cosmetics, paints, and implantable devices) is increasingly widespread and contact with these materials is not only unavoidable, but exposure is often intentional. The intern will have an integral role in research efforts to further understand and predict the effects of metal oxide nanomaterials and how these man-made materials interact with biological processes. Furthermore, the intern will collaborate with leading nanotechnology experts to evaluate metal oxide nanomaterials to protect human health and the environment, leading to possible research publication co-authorship. Educational interns assist marine educators during summer camp sessions. Program Dates: Summer Camp runs from July 8th- August 23rd (including a mandatory intern training session June). Interns are required to work a minimum of 80 hours. This can be in combination with aquarist maintenance. Intern Schedules: Shifts will be pre-assigned based on your availability. The Center offers live exhibits, waterside activities, aquarium displays, tours, and field trips. Its mission is to Inform, Inspire, and Involve those who live in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to take action on its behalf. In addition to learning about the environment and ecosystem, visitors also gain an in-depth understanding about how the watermen harvest Bay resources. Phillips Wharf Environmental Center (PWEC) is offering a unique internship opportunity. Gain hands-on experience while making substantial contributions to environmental education in the Chesapeake Bay region. We are actively recruiting for a college student majoring in Biology, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Fishery Science, or related field who is ready for a resume-builder opportunity. PWEC is located in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay on Tilghmans Island, Maryland. The intern will work in direct contact with experienced environmental scientists and marine biologists. Position: Scallop & Eelgrass Restoration Internship Reports to: Restoration Ecologist Location: Providence, RI Dates: May August 2013 About the Internship Position: Save the Bay is seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual to work with our habitat team in scallop and eelgrass restoration research throughout the Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island coastal waters. Opportunities to assist on other habitat projects such as algae monitoring, salt marshes, and others likely. Scallop restoration research focuses on the use of a spawner sanctuary, spat recruitment and settlement, and population surveys of bay scallops and their predators. Eelgrass restoration research focuses on harvest and transplanting eelgrass to identify suitable large scale restoration, benthic ecology, and transplant survival monitoring. Save the Bay is also part of SeagrassNet, a global monitoring network that documents the status of seagrass resources and the threats to their survival. Field work can involve Scuba diving with both land and boat entries, loading and unloading heavy equipment, bay navigation by small craft, and full days on rocky or sandy beaches. Scuba Open Water certification is required. This position primarily involves field work. Compensation/Scheduling/Additional Requirements: Save The Bay Internships are unpaid, but are available for college credit. Save The Bay will work with your university to ensure that all steps are taken to fulfill any credit requirements. The Scallop & Eelgrass Internship is a minimum of 21 hours a week, but additional days may be added to fulfill any university course/credit requirements. All Save The Bay Interns are also required to work at the Save The Bay Swim. You will need to be available on Saturday, July 20 from 7 am to 2 pm.
