Animal Programs - Marine Mammal Internship

Company Overview:
Since its opening in 1971, the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, FL has grown to feature four theme parks the Magic Kingdom ® Park, Epcot ®, Disneys Hollywood Studios ®, and Disneys Animal Kingdom ® Theme Park. In addition, more than 20 themed resort hotels, two water parks, and the Downtown Disney® Area, a daytime and nighttime entertainment complex, are part of the Walt Disney World Resort.

Department Overview:
This Disney Professional Internship is designed to give the student entry level experience with the day to day care of West Indian manatees and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in a public setting. Interns will deliver formal microphone presentations, prepare diets, maintain cleanliness of all areas, record husbandry data, observe husbandry techniques and observe training techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Guest Presentations - 50%

    • Conduct daily educational presentations on manatees that are entertaining, accurate, and that inspire conservation action.
    • Narrate research sessions stressing cognitive studies, marine conservation issues, and marine mammal awareness.
  • Diet Preparation/Cleaning - 50%

    • Prepare food daily for manatees and dolphins.
    • Sanitize all animal areas, exhibits, and food preparation kitchen.
    • Safe handling of Cleaning/Sanitizing solutions.
  • General

    • Assist with feeding of manatees.
    • Occasionally observe various training sessions with dolphins.
    • Learn training basics, record keeping and marine mammal research techniques.


Basic Qualifications You must meet the basic qualification in order to apply for the internship:

  • Minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0
  • Junior, senior or recent college graduate
  • Psychology , Zoology, Biology, or related major
  • Three months experience with communicating biological information and make it personal and relevant to guests in an informal setting such as a zoo, aquarium, museum, or nature center
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
  • Less than six months experience in a marine mammal setting
  • Strong interest in Marine Mammal field, with long term career goal in training, husbandry and research
  • Proven communication skills in both one-on-one delivery and presentations that communicate a strong conservation message
  • SCUBA certification is required at the time of application.
    Applicants must currently have a SCUBA certification card when applying for the internship. We cannot accept applicants that are currently in SCUBA class or are planning on completing it after application submission.

Coastal Virginia Waterbird Internship

Waterbird intern will be assigned to work alternately with staff from the VA Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) and other partners of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Financial Support: A reimbursement of $154/week living expenses plus free housing and utilities. Housing: Location of housing TBD but may be located in Wachapreague, Virginia or Oyster, Virginia. Housing at both locations is dormitory-style housing and is shared with other interns, summer employees, and graduate research students. Transportation: A personal vehicle is required for daily travel to boat ramp meeting locations (1-25 miles) although every effort will be made to coordinate travel to minimize personal mileage expenses. Area Description: The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a rural area with many opportunities for birding, kayaking, nature walks and shopping and dining in small towns and villages. There is limited access to mainstream amenities but essentials such as grocery stores, hardware stores and department stores (i.e., Walmart) are readily accessible. The Virginia Beach/Norfolk area and Pocomoke, Maryland offer most shopping and entertainment conveniences and are within a reasonable driving distance. Study sites are remote and most are accessible by boat only. These sites offer some of the best opportunities for studying and observing coastal wildlife on the U.S. east coast. Summers months are very hot and humid and biting insects are plentiful. Department Overview:
Interns in Reproductive Biology work as part of the Science Team in the Wildlife Tracking Center at Disney's Animal Kingdom ® Theme Park. These interns receive extensive training in hormonal analysis and learn to conduct hormone assays. Interns in Reproductive Biology also share information about Science Team projects with our guests. This is a laboratory position with no animal contact.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and prepare biological samples for hormonal analysis (e.g. urine and fecal samples from a variety of species including white rhino and okapi).
  • Perform hormonal analyses on a variety of species using enzyme immunoassays (EIA's).
  • Maintain/graph/analyze hormonal data.
  • Share information about Science Team projects with Disneys Animal Kingdom® Theme Park guests.
  • Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Support the team in other capacities as assigned.


Basic Qualifications You must meet the basic qualification in order to apply for the internship:

Habitat Restoration Internship

Qualifications:
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Recent work experience or related college involvement (Service, retail sales, participation or leadership in athletic/team activities, membership or leadership in community, social or academic organizations)
  • Must have a valid drivers license with no more than 2 moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past 3 years
