Since 2004, The Sankofa Center, a 501(c)(3) U.S. operated charity has educated village youths and adults about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and prevented through artistic expression. They educate while changing perceptions using culturally comprehensive methods- African dance-dramas- in Ghana, West Africa. They also conduct free counseling, rapid HIV testing in village outreach tours, and provide links to treatment and life-saving drugs for thousands of women, men, and children in Ghana. Programs consisting of a local crew and cohorts of international interns from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. run throughout the year. Program Description: The Sankofa Center fuses tradtional African dance, drama, & contemporary art genres with W.H.O. health information to educate Ghanaian youths & adults about HIV/AIDS. These very necessary performances are both entertaining & educational. Their program utilizes the vibrant energies of interns & a local team to tour various villages & schools to help eradicate HIV/AIDS in Africa through culturally appropriate methods! They also conduct risk assessment/risk reduction counseling & free rapid HIV testing during village outreach to link those needing treatment with medical partners as outlined by Ghana's National AIDS Control Program. International interns are accomodated with full room & board in The Sankofa Center Compound dormitory with exposure to real world traditional Ghanaian life with trusted host families living in the compound. Cultural exposure is also enhanced through weekend trips to popular tourist & beach destinatons. However, interns have the security of Western trained local staff, health and safety protocols, and American trained coordinators & staff liasions to assist interns throughout the duration of their tenure. On completion interns receive a Certificate of Completion commemorating their service providing a great tool for educational and personal advancement. The mission of the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, a program of The Humane Society of the United States, is to create a humane and sustainable world for all animals, including people, through education advocacy, and the promotion of respect and compassion. Interns at FFWAC have the opportunity to learn about native wildlife in rehabilitation as well as the exotic species who are residents of our Sanctuary. An "intern" is anyone who chooses to perform services for FFA without monetary compensation but may be provided with on-site housing and academic credit, and who completes a specific project at the direction of and on behalf of FFA. Interns must be at least 18 years of age to apply. Internships are available year-round for a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week for 12 weeks up to 40 hours per week for at least 6 weeks; a total minimum commitment of 240 hours. Interns participate in the same activities as volunteers but in a more intense and individualized capacity. Interns will develop their own independent project which they must complete by the end of their term; the project will be confirmed with staff (and any applicable academic advisor) within the first 2 weeks of the interns program. On-site housing may be available for interns committing at least 30 hours per week and will be discussed after receipt of the initial application; please note your interest in housing accommodations in your cover letter. As interns may be traveling from outside of the area, in-person orientations are not required and a phone or Skype interview can be scheduled instead. At least two letters of recommendation must be submitted with the application form when applying for an internship. Copies of any academic requirements should also be submitted. International interns are solely responsible for obtaining any required Visas.

Exodus Refugee Immigration Inc. began in 1981 to serve the legal needs of immigrants and to respond to Cuban refugees that resulted in the Mariel Boatlift in Cuba. In its 30 year history, Exodus has had the responsibility and privilege to extend a warm welcome to these courageous persons seeking safety, freedom and a new home. Beyond hospitality Exodus role is also to provide the goods, services, support and resources necessary to empower these newcomers so that they can achieve self-sufficiency and create the secure and free life that every person deserves. Exodus clients include individual refugees and refugee families (children, adults, and elders). Males and females are equally served. Certified victims of human trafficking, asylees, secondary migrant refugees are also served by Exodus. The largest populations currently served by Exodus are Burmese, Iraqi, and Eritrean refugees.

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native wildlife, and to provide sanctuary, individualized care, and a voice for other animals in need. WRR was founded in 1977 in San Antonio, Texas. Since Spring 2004, WRR has been located at a new 187-acre facility near Kendalia, Texas. WRR serves the cities of San Antonio, Austin, and all surrounding counties, as well as the entire state of Texas. WRR also provides assistance on a national basis to wild animals in need of rescue. WRR provides a permanent home for a variety of mammals (e.g., wolves, bears, big cats, and primates) and non-indigenous birds and reptiles. Each year over 5,000 animals are brought to WRR, mostly from surrounding areas, but many from around the country; the majority of these were rehabilitated and released or given permanent sanctuary. WRR maintains a 24-hour Emergency Hotline and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is supported by a membership of over 11,000 individuals and is assisted by 150 Volunteers. The organization has a Staff of 20 and anywhere from 8 to 15 Animal Care Interns who come from the U.S. and abroad to work at the Sanctuary and gain experience and training in wildlife rehabilitation and animal care. In addition, WRR provides advice and assistance in dealing with human-wildlife encounters in a non-lethal manner. Whether through training, education, advocacy, or direct animal care, WRR fulfills its commitment to wildlife protection and ethical, sustainable relations between humans and the natural world. Because of our commitment to respect for the rights and needs of wildlife, the main WRR facilities and grounds are not open to the public.

POSITION SUMMARY The Asia/Eurasia Partnerships division is one of four regional teams within the Global Programs department of AmeriCares. We support health care and social service programs in such countries as Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Kosovo, the Philippines, Romania, and Uzbekistan. Our programs combine gift-in-kind aid donations with financial grants and training opportunities in order to build local capacity to address some of the most pressing health care issues, including: disaster management, maternal and neonatal survival, child nutrition, infectious disease outbreaks, and prevention and control of chronic conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The AmeriCares internship in Asia/Eurasia Partnerships provides an exciting opportunity for a student interested in humanitarian aid operations in the region. Our three-person team manages a diverse and challenging portfolio that offers a very substantive work experience for an intern. The position is structured such that the intern is engaged in daily workflow by taking on assignments of immediate importance while also managing longer-term projects that will help strengthen our efficiency and effectiveness. In addition, throughout the duration of the internship, the intern will participate in an institution-wide group project along with other summer interns.

They provide a wide range of health care services and have a profound impact on the quality of life and productivity of the people they treat. Medical volunteer teams travel to remote villages to provide primary health care and health education, as well as to urban slums where extreme poverty equally prevents access to care. AmeriCares also supports teams of highly skilled surgeons conducting sophisticated cardiovascular, orthopedic and reconstructive procedures at hospitals that may lack appropriate staff, equipment and other essential resources. All donate their time and expertise to treat people who might otherwise not receive care and to transfer knowledge to strengthen local health care capabilities. Last year, the program provisioned more than 1,050 volunteer medical teams traveling to 83 countries with over $40 million in medical and surgical supplies. The Medical Outreach Program (MOP) is distinguished by the large volume of aid it provides, the direct delivery of products via medical volunteers, and its high impact in a short time frame. More than one hundred requests for medical donations are processed each month involving hundreds of medical professionals and sponsoring organizations, and resulting in thousands of people receiving desperately needed health care. While we have a large body of documentation on these aspects of the program, some thoughtful analysis is needed to learn more about our constituents so we can better serve them and help more people access the health care and medicines they need.
