The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is a 757-bed teaching hospital in Baltimore, Md., that provides a full range of health services to people throughout Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. It is a national and regional referral center for trauma, cancer care, cardiac care, neurocare, womens and childrens health, and organ transplants. The medical center is the flagship hospital of the University of Maryland Medical System, a private, not-for-profit network of 12 academic, community and specialty hospitals throughout Maryland. UMMC recognizes that disseminating information about its medical programs and services in innovative ways is key to serving its various audiences from patients and visitors to employees. To that end, UMMC has established the Communications & Public Affairs Internship Program to offer hands-on learning opportunities for college students interested in media relations/PR, editorial (communications and writing), graphic design, web development, and video and multimedia production (including animation). The UMMC Internship Program provides highly qualified college students (preferably juniors) the opportunity to participate in a dynamic communications department. Interns can apply for one of four areas of focus and may be eligible to receive course credit (subject to the requirements of the students academic institution). Each nonpaid internship is for a duration of one semester with 10-20 hours of work required per week at the UMMC offices in Baltimore. Extensions may be available to high-performing interns.

This position requires a minimum commitment of 4 days/ week and consistent attendance to ensure that projects are seen to completion. ABOUT AMERICARES AmeriCares is a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization that delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world and across the United States. Since it was established in 1982, AmeriCares has distributed more than $10 billion in humanitarian aid to 164 countries. POSITION SUMMARY The Latin American Partnerships team is one of 4 regional teams within the Global Partnerships department of AmeriCares. Each of the teams serves the regions in which they work by coordinating with in-country partners to facilitate projects, programs, grants, and shipments for a broad range of beneficiary institutions. In Latin America and the Caribbean we work with 12 partners in 9 countries to deliver lifesaving medicines and medical supplies to national hospitals, nonprofit clinics, rural health outposts, and networks of physicians going on medical brigades throughout the region. The Latin American Partnerships internship provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduates interested in humanitarian aid operations in the region. Our four person team manages the largest regional portfolio within Global Partnerships; the significant workload this entails consistently offers a substantive work experience for our interns. The position is structured such that the intern is engaged in our teams daily workflow by both taking on assignments of immediate importance and by also focusing on lengthier assignments that contribute to improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our work.
