Company Overview:
Since its opening in 1971, the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, FL has grown to feature four theme parks the Magic Kingdom ® Park, Epcot ®, Disneys Hollywood Studios ®, and Disneys Animal Kingdom ® Theme Park. In addition, more than 20 themed resort hotels, two water parks, and the Downtown Disney® Area, a daytime and nighttime entertainment complex, are part of the Walt Disney World Resort.

Department Overview:
The Animal Nutrition Center, a department within Animal Health, is a centralized food preparation operation that provides for all dietary needs of the Walt Disney World® Resort animal collection. The Animal Nutrition Center operates 7 days a week from 5 am to 4 pm. This Disney Professional Internship provides work experience within a comprehensive nutrition program and includes animal food production (75 percent), as well as animal nutrition research (25 percent) components. No direct animal contact takes place in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside nutrition assistants to prepare and deliver balanced and enriching diets for the 1500+ animals living at Disneys Animal Kingdom ® Theme Park and Disneys Animal Kingdom Lodge ®.
  • Engage guests in conversations relating to conservation and the Animal Nutrition Center mission.
  • Assist in nutrition research projects such as food nutrient analysis (sample processing, data collection and entry) and quality control (forages, feeds, browses, etc.).
  • Utilize in-house laboratory equipment (ovens, freeze dryer, grinder, Near Infrared Reflectance Spectrophotometer, bomb calorimeter, etc.).
  • Track, organize and present data on animals in our collection to Animal Nutrition Center staff.
  • Work in a team environment to accomplish area tasks.


Basic Qualifications You must meet the basic qualification in order to apply for the internship:

  • Minimum Grade Point Average 2.5
  • Junior, senior or recent college graduate
  • Animal Science, Nutrition, Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Biology, Food Science or other related science majors
  • Interest/focus must be in Animal Nutrition
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel 2007 (including use of functions and formatting). Will not require additional training to use either program
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and team lift 75 pounds (more or less) throughout the day
  • Ability to speak in front of groups
  • Completion of at least one full semester college level nutrition course
  • Sincere interest in animal nutrition and desire to continue learning about nutrition


Preferred Qualifications
  • Three months of independent research or paid laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated skills in technical writing
  • Three months of animal husbandry or food preparation experience
  • Minimum Grade Point Average 3.0

  • Current Active Disney cast members must meet Professional Internship transfer guidelines (for Walt Disney World cast members this is no more than four points and one reprimand in the last six months; for Disneyland cast members this is six months of consecutive service and a performance record clear of any disciplinary issues (warnings, suspensions, etc.) for at least six months)


Program Length:
The approximate dates of this internship are June 2013 through January 2014. Interns must be fully available for the duration of the internship.

A limited amount of company-sponsored housing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Webcasting Administration

Intern will manage NSCs webcasting service of various events and games during the spring and summer. The program will include producing/directing broadcast of up to 18 Minnesota Stars pro soccer home games, several NSC soccer tournaments, including USA CUP and NSC Cup. Also includes scheduling camera and on-air talent, promoting the product, troubleshooting issues and developing business plans. This position has elements of broadcast production and business management. Experience in using a TriCaster would be a plus. Start: March 2013 on a part time basis until May when the position becomes full time, and then part-time after August. Position will end when the Minnesota Stars season ends.
