In the midst of shrinking education budgets, Behind the Book (BtheB) offers NYC students a refreshingly creative and empowering experience. We bring authors and their books into individual classrooms to build literacy skills and create a community of life-long readers and writers. Authors teach a series of workshops that engage and inspire students and culminate in the publication of a writing project, such as an illustrated book, a school newspaper, or a short story anthology. Behind the Book interns are essential in supporting a growing organization, and gain valuable skills and experience in project management and nonprofit work. YES! Magazines two online reporting interns collaborate with the web editor and web managing editor to assist with all aspects of reporting, editing, and posting progressive news for yesmagazine.org. These interns receive training and guidance in the essential skills of web journalism, including contacting sources, conducting interviews, organizing information, fact-checking, writing headlines, search-engine optimization, and uploading text and multimedia into our content-management system. Because this is a small team, this program requires interns to take substantial responsibility for writing and producing stories. Interns can expect to leave the program with a wide range of marketable skills in online journalism and publishing. Internships require an in-office time commitment of 30 hours per week for a minimum of three months. Although interns are unpaid, the organization supplies housing in a five-bedroom house near the office where most interns choose to live. The Development Intern will work with the development staff and assist with the execution of daily projects, such as, accurate and prompt recording of gifts, fulfillment of benefits, membership cards and materials, renewals, direct mail program and personal and telephone solicitations pertaining to development events. TIME COMMITMENT: Interns are accepted year-round. The focus of the work and time commitment required will be somewhat dictated by the time of the year. Summer: Beginning mid-May and running through August 20; Must be available daily from June 1 July 15; Must be willing to work nights and evenings; ITHF can be flexible on start and end dates, but requires strong commitment during peak tournament season of June 1 July 15. COMPENSATION: Interns must be receiving college credit to be eligible for this position. Upon proof of enrollment in a college course, interns will be paid a stipend of $20 per day. This SUMMER 2013 STUDENT internship opportunity is designed to give students experience in facility management, marketing, supervision, aerobic and weight training instruction and health promotion. The health and fitness intern position is 10-12 weeks in length, for 15-20 hours per week, depending on the student's schedule.
