Organization Description Free the Slaves (FTS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to ending modern slavery worldwide. Founded in 2000, FTS partners with grassroots organizations in six countries to free people from slavery, help them rebuild their lives, and do what it takes to end slavery in their communities. Current partners include local anti-slavery organizations in Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Brazil, India and Nepal. Informed by on-the-ground work and in-depth research, we then bring real-world solutions to policymakers and business leaders in the areas of policy, research, slave-free trade and communications, engage in high-profile advocacy campaigns on the federal and international level, and share compelling stories that inspire individuals to act and to build a global movement against slavery. FTS is headquartered in Washington DC. Internship Program Description The Free the Slaves internship program is a formal effort to develop and train future leaders of the anti-slavery movement. We seek to provide each participant with training and hands-on experience in various facets of anti-slavery work. The program operates out of the Washington, DC office of Free the Slaves on a semester system, with three sessions per year: Spring (January to May), Summer (June to August), and Fall (September to December). Participants are expected to participate in an orientation session at the beginning of each semester. Internships are unpaid but students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Free the Slaves internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by FTS staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to federal and international anti-slavery advocacy. TapFury is a social gaming and entertainment start-up with several successful websites and mobile apps. We strive to bring quality entertainment content and services to the youth demographic. We are currently seeking a dynamic social media intern to manage the social media presence for one of our humor products, PrankDial.com. PrankDial currently has 275k Facebook fans and 22k Twitter followers. We are looking for someone who is extremely humorous, creative, diligent and resourceful to engage our current audience as well as grow our social media presence though Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, as well as a bi-weekly newsletter. Must have a great sense of humor that is appropriate for our brand and young audience. Must be comfortable engaging a larger audience over social media and getting conversations started. Familiarity with social media management and analytics tools a must. We are ideally looking for someone who is currently in school and is able to work part-time. We will work with the right candidate to determine a workable schedule. Time commitment will be around 10-hours a week . This is a year-around internship- we need someone who can start 1/15/2013 and work during the school year. RETAIN Coaching is a start up Parental Leave Transition Coaching company that helps working parents (or soon to be parents) and their work organizations better navigate the complex maternity/paternity leave time period (preparing for leave, during leave, returning from leave). RETAIN works with clients using an evidence-based coaching model over a roughly 8 month period. This longer time-frame allows the opportunity for systemic organizational change as well as the supported retention of working parents. Currently RETAIN Coaching is comprised of one founder, a vice president, and a growing network of independent coaches. RETAIN Coaching is at the very beginning of the start-up phase which allows an intern to get in on the ground floor. It is planned that the 3 month internship will turn into a paying job if cash-flow allows (terms to be negotiated). A national association for municipally owned electric utilities has an immediate internship opportunity for a student to work part-time 15-20 hours/week. The intern will gain valuable experience working at a trade association in the electric industry by supporting activities of APPAs research and grant program, Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED). The DEED intern will work with program Director on projects related to membership and marketing efforts and assist with grant administration activities. The internship will include assisting the Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Manager with the development and improvement of emergency preparedness and Continuity of Operations Plans, site inspections and data recording, developing and coordinating drills, training opportunities, and table top, and tracking approaching and potential disasters, such as severe weather emergencies. Additionally, the internship will involve participating in working groups to create strategies towards public-private CCTV integration into a DC monitoring facility. Another key assignment for this internship will be gathering data and coordinating with property managers for a mobile application which will display the location of the closest AED unit during a cardiac emergency. The intern will visit pre-identified properties, track and provide information releases to be signed by the property manager, and updating the location information using a mobile GIS tablet application. After completion of the project, the intern will develop a presentation to present at the BID staff meeting and the safety alliance meeting. This data collection effort will allow information from Downtown DC to be included in an existing national application available from the iTunes store.
