POSITION SUMMARY: Organized by The Franklin Institute, The Philadelphia Science Festival is a community-wide celebration of science that takes place annually in April. The Festival features lectures, debates, hands-on activities, special exhibitions and a variety of other informal science education experiences for Philadelphians of all ages. For ten days, the prevalence of science and scientists in the Philadelphia region will be showcased, capturing the imagination of the public by working with local neighborhoods and highlighting the science happening throughout the city on a daily basis. A partnership between organizations of varying size and mission The Philadelphia Science Festival is a citywide event with programs and exhibitions taking place in each of the citys many neighborhoods, providing informal science programming accessible to every Philadelphia resident. The Science Festival Intern will be asked to: Support outreach efforts to schools and community groups oWorking with groups to creatively develop potential programs that will take place during the Science Festival Support Social Media and PR effort about Festival Programs Attend Festival Programs and support program evaluation efforts Support event planning for the Science Festival Programs Provide support to program partners as needed Support distribution of materials and information to teachers and community leaders Spring Only: Support event logistics at Festival programs, serving as a PSF representative Other duties as assigned EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Students pursuing a degree in the sciences or a degree in public relations, communications, marketing or event planning preferred. SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED: Must be comfortable making cold calls to partnering organizations or returning general inquiries. Strong writing and communication skills required. SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of 10 hours per week required. Spring intern must be available all day on Saturday, April 20, 2013 for the Science Carnival and be willing to increase hours, including some evening work, during the Philadelphia Science Festival program week, April 19 April 28, 2013. Since its opening in 1971, the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, FL has grown to feature four theme parks the Magic Kingdom ® Park, Epcot ®, Disneys Hollywood Studios ®, and Disneys Animal Kingdom ® Theme Park. In addition, more than 20 themed resort hotels, two water parks, and the Downtown Disney® Area, a daytime and nighttime entertainment complex, are part of the Walt Disney World Resort.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for building operations research and statistical models for various revenue management and pricing systems.

Intern assignments may include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing data collection, data cleaning, data validation, and reporting tasks for revenue management systems and applications
  • Support the analysis and validation of forecasting and optimization models
  • Model and analyze revenue management and pricing related issues using various mathematical, statistical, and simulation techniques


Basic Qualifications These are the minimum qualifications you need to be considered for this position:

  • Currently enrolled in, or recently completed study from a graduate school program leading to a PhD
  • Major field in Statistics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Math, Economics or related areas
  • Proven experience with statistical, forecasting, and optimization software including SAS
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated strong partnering skills
  • Demonstrated aptitude and willingness to learn new science, software applications and tools
  • Familiarity with Excel, Word and PowerPoint


Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in SAS
  • Proficiency with linear programming and / or dynamic programming implementations
  • Proficiency with forecasting methodologies
  • Proficiency with Bayesian statistics
  • Proficiency with discrete event simulation
  • Prior research or industrial experience in revenue management, pricing, and/or supply chain applications

Internship Eligibility:
  • Must be enrolled in a U. S. college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Professional Internship
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Not have already completed two consecutive (spring/fall) College or Professional Internship Programs
  • Must possess unrestricted work authorization
  • Must provide full work availability
  • Must provide own transportation to/from work
  • Current Active Disney cast members must meet Professional Internship transfer guidelines (for Walt Disney World cast members this is no more than four points and one reprimand in the last six months; for Disneyland cast members this is six months of consecutive service and a performance record clear of any disciplinary issues (warnings, suspensions, etc.) for at least six months)


Program Length:
The approximate dates of this internship are June 2013 through January 2014. Interns must be fully available for the duration of the internship.

Housing:
For positions located in Central Florida only , a limited amount of company-sponsored housing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants in California are responsible for identifying their own housing accommodations.
