Saugerties Farmers Market
Saugerties Farmer's Market —
Saugerties, NY
The mission of the Saugerties Farmers Market is to bring local, seasonal food to the market; promote healthy eating; preserve small family farms; build community; and attract visitors to historic Saugerties. We are seeking an intern to help us spread this concept to a wider market of consumers.
Description:
Interns at the Saugerties Farmers Market (SFM) gain experience in several areas including promotion, management, events planning, and building community as well as food distribution and support of local agriculture, as they participate in the management of a local farmers market. The SFM is in its 12th year of operation, has an experienced Market Manager, a core of active volunteers, a range of farmers and food producers, and a devoted customer following.
Interns work closely with the Market Manager to help set up and breakdown the weekly Saturday market; greet farmers and customers; conduct surveys; manage events (chef demos, live music, special events); update and maintain records; take photographs; assist in promotion through social media, a blog, a weekly press release, FRESH! (weekly e-newsletter), and the SFM website; and participate in ongoing strategic planning.
Internships are unpaid volunteer positions, however we do provide a $10.00 a week stipend to cover lunch at the market site on Saturdays. The SFM Committee is available to assist accepted candidates with resume development and school credit, where appropriate.
The preferred schedule for interns includes about 8 hours of work on Saturday market days plus additional flex-time hours to be mutually agreed upon. SFM will work with each intern based on the individuals availability and interests.
