Horticulture Internship- Summer 2013

Internship Title: Horticulture Internship Internship Department: Planning and Design Objective: To expose interns to the many facets of sustainability, horticulture, cultivation and design. General Responsibilities Plant, weed, water and otherwise maintain the aquarium's gardens under supervision of staff. Other duties and projects as assigned. All Interns would be responsible for their own project and record keeping. Potential Intern Projects Animal Foods Program This project will develop harvest schedule and amounts for crops that will provide enrichment to our animals. This project also includes coordinating with Fishes department for the weekly delivery schedule. Xeriscape, Dune & Wetland Gardens This project involves weekly weeding and maintenance. New plantings will be monitored and hand watered if needed. Plant ID list to be compiled. Square Foot Vegetable Garden (Urban Vegetable Gardening) Intensive vegetable growing demonstration garden. This area is developed to show visitors the amount of produce that can be grown in a small area. Migratory Bird Garden This 40,000 square foot garden provides habitat for migrating species on our buildings lakeside. New native plantings will be monitored, weeded and plant ID list compiled. Composting Display This area will demonstrate different methods of composting for our visitors to experience. Vermicomposting and other methods will be employed and evaluated. Collect composting data on a day-to-day basis. Final Product(s): A better understanding of sustainable gardening practices, food systems and organic growing techniques. Learning Potential: Exposure to a variety of environmental and agricultural issues through research and field experience. Ability to manage, organize and communicate various sustainable gardening practices through the building and to Shedds guests. Connections to other Shedd staff, interns and vendors through formal and informal trainings as well as mentorship opportunities. Internship Title: Guest Engagement Intern Internship Department: Learning, Planning & Evaluation Objective: This project-based experience will help support the training and onboarding of volunteers, and focus on audio/visual media development and production. Responsibilities: Research best practices for use of audio/visual media to enhance volunteer training Integrate concepts from Shedds Learning Framework, goals, and outcomes document into the development and production of materials. Interview volunteers to get their thoughts and feedback about audio/visual components to aid in their training and onboarding Observe training sessions for volunteers Observe interactions between volunteers and aquarium guests. Integrate volunteer feedback into development plans Develop audio/visual content that will be used during the onboarding and training of new volunteers Record audio/visual pieces on; computer, tablet device, and/or MP3 device Attend an participate in volunteer meetings when appropriate Share-out/update at department meetings Final Product(s): Produce at least one audio, and at least one visual media piece to aid in the training and onboarding of volunteers. Learning Potential: Through the aquarium-wide intern program, interns will gain knowledge about Shedd operations/practices. The intern will learn about the educational philosophies and practice of interpretation and audio/visual content development. The intern will be expected to share their projects in a poster-session style forum (intern showcase scheduled through the aquarium-wide intern program). This growth opportunity provides the interns with a public-speaking experience as well as networking with aquarium staff.
