Volunteer Program Assistant Internship

Position: Volunteer Program Assistant Internship Reports To: Volunteer & Internship Manager Location: Save The Bay Center, Providence, RI Dates: Summer 2013 This internship is offered year round. Academic year preference given to students who can serve two semesters. Summary of Position: Save The Bay has a robust volunteer program, working with over 2,100 volunteers annually in a variety of capacities. Volunteers contribute an average of 10,000 hours of service to the organization each year. A career in volunteer management is truly a career in human resources, marketing, event management, community outreach and more! An internship in the volunteer program will provide students with the skills to organize events, manage & recognize volunteers, promote volunteer opportunities and internships, oversee outreach projects and events, manage individual volunteer programs, and coordinate efforts with a diverse staff. The position will serve as an assistant to the Volunteer Manager and Administrative team working on Save The Bays various volunteer events and programs. The intern will assist with the planning and implementation of the CVS/Caremark Charity Classic, Save The Bay Swim, Earth Day, Shoreline & Community Cleanups, Storm Drain Markings, Internships and other events. This internship will also assist with the general day-to-day administrative support that is required to keep a volunteer program at a non-profit running. Compensation: Save The Bay Internships are unpaid. Save The Bay will work with your school to receive credit for your internship. All Save The Bay Interns are also required to work at the Save The Bay Swim. You will need to be available on Saturday, July 20 from 7 am to 2 pm. Habitat Restoration Internship

Position: Habitat Restoration Internship Reports to: Coastal Ecologist Location: Bay Center, Providence, RI Dates: 2-4 positions a year Summer: May August 2013 Time commitment: One day per week minimum About the Internship Position: Save The Bay seeks a highly motivated individual to support Save The Bay's Habitat Protection and Restoration Program in the implementation and coordination of community based habitat restoration projects. Duties include conducting research, field monitoring, database management, and planning associated with the restoration of Narragansett Bay habitats. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to have a hands-on role in ecological restoration efforts. Interns will gain an understanding of applied ecological restoration techniques, field monitoring protocols, and environmental problem solving techniques. Interns will also gain experience working with volunteers and collaborating with community organizations. Scallop & Eelgrass Restoration Internship

Position: Scallop & Eelgrass Restoration Internship Reports to: Restoration Ecologist Location: Providence, RI Dates: May August 2013 About the Internship Position: Save the Bay is seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual to work with our habitat team in scallop and eelgrass restoration research throughout the Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island coastal waters. Opportunities to assist on other habitat projects such as algae monitoring, salt marshes, and others likely. Scallop restoration research focuses on the use of a spawner sanctuary, spat recruitment and settlement, and population surveys of bay scallops and their predators. Eelgrass restoration research focuses on harvest and transplanting eelgrass to identify suitable large scale restoration, benthic ecology, and transplant survival monitoring. Save the Bay is also part of SeagrassNet, a global monitoring network that documents the status of seagrass resources and the threats to their survival. Field work can involve Scuba diving with both land and boat entries, loading and unloading heavy equipment, bay navigation by small craft, and full days on rocky or sandy beaches. Scuba Open Water certification is required. This position primarily involves field work. The Scallop & Eelgrass Internship is a minimum of 21 hours a week, but additional days may be added to fulfill any university course/credit requirements. This intern will assist with events in the Westerly area, administrative duties at the office, and light aquaria work for our tanks. This internship will also involve helping with public programming needs at the office and assisting drop-in guests. The position will serve as an assistant to the South County COASTKEEPER®, working on stormwater research primarily in the southern part of the state, but also throughout the state. Duties include conducting research, field monitoring, database management, and planning associated with our local waters. Compensation/Scheduling/Additional Requirements: Save The Bay Internships are unpaid, but are available for college credit. Save The Bay will work with your university to ensure that all steps are taken to fulfill any credit requirements. South County Coast Internship is a minimum of 14 hours a week (2 days), but additional days may be added to fulfill any university course/credit requirements. All Save The Bay Interns are also required to work at the Save The Bay Swim. You will need to be available on Saturday, July 20 from 7 am to 2 pm. Academic year preference given to students who can serve two semesters. Summary of Position: The position will serve as an assistant to the Events Manager, working on Save The Bays longest running event, the Annual Save The Bay Swim. Your role will be to assist in swimmer registration, obtain donations, organize swim results and prizes, organization, set up and cleanup for the day of the event in July. This internship exposes students, recent graduates or those trying to fill an employment gap to implementing and running a successful fundraising event. Compensation: Save The Bay Internships are unpaid, but are available for college credit. Save The Bay will work with your university to ensure that all steps are taken to fulfill any credit requirements. Intern must be available until mid-August, 2013. Schedule will vary and will be set with the Events Manager. Hours will pick up as you get closer to the Swim. The two weeks prior to the swim could be up to 5 days per week.
