Coastal Virginia Waterbird Internship
Chincoteague National WIldlife Refuge —
Machipongo, VA
Waterbird intern will be assigned to work alternately with staff from the VA Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) and other partners of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Financial Support: A reimbursement of $154/week living expenses plus free housing and utilities.
Housing: Location of housing TBD but may be located in Wachapreague, Virginia or Oyster, Virginia. Housing at both locations is dormitory-style housing and is shared with other interns, summer employees, and graduate research students.
Transportation: A personal vehicle is required for daily travel to boat ramp meeting locations (1-25 miles) although every effort will be made to coordinate travel to minimize personal mileage expenses.
Area Description: The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a rural area with many opportunities for birding, kayaking, nature walks and shopping and dining in small towns and villages. There is limited access to mainstream amenities but essentials such as grocery stores, hardware stores and department stores (i.e., Walmart) are readily accessible. The Virginia Beach/Norfolk area and Pocomoke, Maryland offer most shopping and entertainment conveniences and are within a reasonable driving distance. Study sites are remote and most are accessible by boat only. These sites offer some of the best opportunities for studying and observing coastal wildlife on the U.S. east coast. Summers months are very hot and humid and biting insects are plentiful.
