Prairie Om Farm Internship

Prairie Om FarmJamesport, MO
Prairie Om Farm produces pasture-raised sheep, chicken, and beef in Grundy County, Missouri. The farm sits beside beautiful Poosey State Forest, and contains an idyllic blend of rolling pasture and deciduous forest. Jamesport, Missouri, the nearest town, is a hub of Old-Order Amish and Mennonite life. Horse-drawn buggies are common sites along the roads and highways. As such, Jamesport is a popular tourist and antiquing destination, and has several large festivals every year. Jamesport is a beautiful and old-fashioned place to live, full of interesting people and possibilities. Prairie Om is run by David Schafer, with help from his mate, Renee DeTar, and farmhand Jamie Morton. David also owns Featherman Equipment, a producer of chicken processing equipment, and Jamesport Yoga, the only yoga studio in northwestern Missouri. We at Prairie Om Farm are all about producing delicious, sustainable, real food. Prairie Om Farm is seeking an unpaid intern for a one-year internship beginning in the summer of 2013. Room and board will be provided, along with the opportunity to make money through farm ventures and teaching yoga classes. The intern will also have access to yoga classes and fitness facilities. The internship may lead to an offer of long-term residency at the farm, based on work ethic and how well the intern fits in with the rest of the farm family. The key benefit of this experience will be in education and exposure. At the end of one year, the candidate will not only have learned about raising pastured animals for direct marketing to consumers, he or she will also have developed valuable connections in the sustainable agriculture field. To help facilitate these connections, the intern will be encouraged to come along to one of the major sustainable agriculture conferences in the U.S. (such as the Mother Earth News Fair, Southern SAWG Convention, or M.O.S.E.S.) as a representative of Featherman Equipment. At the conference, the intern will have the opportunity to attend seminars and round-table discussions, network with other farmers, and meet a lot of cool and interesting people.
