Position Description
Systems Engineering Intern for defense programs in Huntsville, Alabama. Boeing Huntsville defense programs include the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) National Team and the Ground-based Midcourse Defense System (GMD). The National Team supports the MDA as it develops, tests, and fields an integrated Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). The GMD System is the first and only operationally deployed missile defense program to defend the homeland against long-range ballistic missile attacks. The system provides early detection and tracking during the boost phase, midcourse target discrimination, precision intercept and destruction of inbound ICBMs through force of hit-to-kill technology. GMD has been in development since 1998 and is based on technologies pioneered by the MDA in the 1980s and 1990s. As prime contractor, Boeing is designing, producing, integrating, testing and sustaining all GMD components. Other defense programs include ground combat vehicles, PAC-3 and IBCS. Interns are typically paired with a senior engineer to perform engineering tasks associated with the development and verification of product performance requirements.
-Responsibilities may include:
-a) facilitate resolution of cross-functional technical issues identified by others to ensure optimized solutions; b) assist with the development and maintenance of integrated planning products and associated data gathering; c) assist with the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements management processes and tools; d) support test planning and execution; e) assist with the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes and tools; f) provide engineering support to avionics or mechanical systems definition and design; g) support engineering review of subcontractor specifications and products; h) perform system performance analysis using MATLAB based tools; i) develop system models using SysML; j) support translation of customer needs to system requirements and use cases.
-Engineering internships are full-time positions and will typically run from May through August, 2013.
-REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Experience using MATLAB. Participant or Lead role on an engineering team project. Experience compiling technical data into reports or presentations.
-PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Prior systems engineering internship on spaceflight and/or missile programs or graduate study research using systems engineering practices. Experience implementing industry standard systems engineering processes and procedures using industry standard tools such as DOORS, Rhapsody, System Architect or phx ModelCenter. Engineering lead position on team project. Training or experience creating system models using SysML. Understanding of drawing standards, drawing and configuration management systems, and producibility principles. Understanding of lean engineering principles. Demonstrated ability to consolidate technical data into reports and presentations and clearly communicate technical information to a variety of audiences. Understanding of architecture frameworks such as DODAF.
