Summer Editorial Intern at The Mary Sue

Abrams MediaNew York, NY
Its that time again! The Mary Sue is seeking a kick-ass editorial intern for the summer. This is no coffee-and-errandsinternship: our interns spend 90% of their time writing, and most definitely receive bylines for all of their stories. Hold on, you say, darting your eyes about confusedly. Whats The Mary Sue? The Mary Sue is the geeky woman arm (I dunno, maybe its got a TARDIS tattoo?) of the shadowy, all-powerful Abrams Media collective. Were six sites reaching over 10 million people a month. Were less than three years old. Weve got big things ahead of us. But what will I do as an intern? you ask, wringing your hands in anticipation, or possibly consternation. Youll join us in our offices (yeah, a loft in SoHo, exposed brick, no big thing), write, look at Google Reader, write, write some more, learn to be a Real Live Blogger, etc. How can I get this wondrous gig? you ululate, collapsing to the floor in paroxysms of excitement, perhaps foaming at the mouth a bit for effect. Its pretty simple. What were looking for: The ideal candidate is a current college student looking for hands-on writing experience at a news startup. Internships run from TIME-TIME; start and end dates are flexible. Yes, you must be available to work in our office in NYC. No, this is not a paid internship. Yes, we can give you credit. The primary qualification for this job is an encyclopedic knowledge of, and obsessive enthusiasm for, multiple aspects of geek culture. If you are knowledgeable about weird, obscure anime or manga, thrive on television and movie casting news, or have incorporated the names of pages on TVTropes.org into your conversational vocabulary, then this is the job for you. The secondary, but just as important, qualification is being able to write quickly and clearly (on topics from your geek specialties to gender issues), without weird grammatical or spelling issues, on topics that you yourself think up/discover on the interwebs. Bonus points if you have any of the following qualifications: **Previous experience in pop culture blogging or otherwise writing for the internet in a professional capacity. **Knowledge of blogging software. **Knowledge of the major personalities and figures in both the real and fictional sides of geekdom. **Basic experience with photo-editing software. **An ability to listen, take direction, and follow through with assigned tasks. And heres some way less important criteria that, if they apply to you, we still totally want to know about: **Knowledge of anime and manga fandoms. **Experience in science writing or if you just have had some good science education (more like if you are taking a science-oriented major or minor, than if you took Biology 101 a couple years ago). **An interest in writing and storytelling tropes.

Communications Internship

Free the SlavesWashington, DC
Organization Description Free the Slaves (FTS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to ending modern slavery worldwide. Founded in 2000, FTS partners with grassroots organizations in six countries to free people from slavery, help them rebuild their lives, and do what it takes to end slavery in their communities. Current partners include local anti-slavery organizations in Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Brazil, India and Nepal. Informed by on-the- ground work and in-depth research, we then bring real-world solutions to policymakers and business leaders in the areas of policy, research, slave-free trade and communications, engage in high-profile advocacy campaigns on the federal and international level, and share compelling stories that inspire individuals to act and to build a global movement against slavery. FTS is headquartered in Washington D.C. Internship Program Description The Free the Slaves internship program is a formal effort to develop and train future leaders of the anti-slavery movement. We seek to provide each participant with training and hands- on experience in various facets of anti-slavery work. The program operates out of the Washington, D.C. office of Free the Slaves on a semester system, with three sessions per year: Spring (January to May), Summer (June to August), and Fall (September to December). Participants are expected to participate in an orientation session at the beginning of each semester. Internships are unpaid but students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Free the Slaves internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by FTS staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to federal and international anti- slavery advocacy. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
