The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) is a fast-growing association of patients, family members and medical professionals impacted by this often misdiagnosed and difficult illness. PHA is committed to maintaining the organization's volunteer spirit and to building opportunities for those affected by pulmonary hypertension to be involved in solutions to the challenges the illness creates. PHAs Medical Services Internship offers students an opportunity to assist the Associate Director, Medical Services and program associates in providing services to physicians, researchers, nurses and patients. This critical support will enable us to continue to provide vital services to the PH community. The Medical Services Intern will be instrumental in helping staff manage PHAs two medical membership networks and ensure that medical professionals who belong to these groups have access to the resources they need. This intern will have a wide range of experiences in managing the medical side of a health-related non-profit. You will be treated as a respected team member. Our office is a friendly and welcoming environment. Interns may also earn college credit. If you would like to design a project that helps you meet your educational goals, we will work with you to achieve this. Our office is located in downtown Silver Spring, Md., and is Metro accessible. Chemotherapy is a mainstay of cancer treatment, yet despite many studies, the benefits and risks of chemotherapy have not been thoroughly evaluated. More alarmingly, growing evidence suggests that only a fraction of patients actually benefit from chemotherapy while others may be harmed unnecessarily. Thus, we are founding a non-profit organization to advance personalized cancer treatment and to help physicians and patients make the best choices by conducting imperative clinical trials. Dr. Christian Apfel, MD, PhD, is an adjunct professor at UCSF and has over a decade of experience designing and conducting research studies that have changed clinical practice. He is now assembling a team to undertake an even more ambitious goal: Saving one million life-years of unnecessary suffering from cancer within the next two decades. We are looking for motivated, creative, skilled, and dedicated interns with an interest in cancer research to assist in building our new non-profit organization, which is based in Larkspur, CA. Current priorities include a) developing a website and logo; b) designing clinical study protocols; c) recruiting medical centers to enroll patients; and, d) writing grant applications to obtain funding from other foundations and philanthropists.

The Animal Care Intern will help with all aspects of daily animal upkeep. This includes but is not limited to: diet preparation, cleaning enclosures, weighing patients, bottle-feeding orphaned babies, administering medications and vaccinations, and animal intakes. These tasks can be labor intensive so you must be able to lift at least 50 pounds. The position is unpaid and no housing is offered. The Education Outreach Intern will be involved in all aspects of our education programs. This will include but is not limited to: leading field trips at our center, giving private tours, presenting to schools and other community groups, supervising birthday parties, and manning booths at community events. They will also be responsible for helping with animal care tasks as needed, including cleaning enclosures, diet preparation and bottle-feeding orphaned babies. Undergraduate students interested in the Communications Internship will work with the Communications and Marketing Director to develop and organize media lists, submit letters-to-the-editor and be a liaison between PPSP and clients interested in sharing their stories.
