This paid internship will put the intern in the middle of a fast-paced, digital-first media outlet and the intern will be treated like a regular member of team. Ideal candidates have a passion for media and healthcare; have an understanding of social media; are coachable yet independent, critical thinkers; are willing to try different approaches; and are flexible enough to take on different duties throughout the summer. Knowledge of WordPress and other content management systems is also a big plus. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position. The Front Porch Center for Technology Innovation and Wellbeing (FPCTIW) explores the innovative uses of technology to empower individuals to live well, especially in their later years. FPCTIW works collaboratively with all stakeholders and in partnership with funding sources, researchers and technology partners. The MeHCA Computer Instructor will provide basic computer literacy training to seniors for the Model eHealth Community for Aging (MeHCA) project, and will report to the FPCTIW director. The Model eHealth Community for Aging project (MeHCA) focuses on deploying health-related, technology-based activities for a diverse population of senior and disabled residents of the Los Angeles Koreatown neighborhood. In support of one component of this project, the volunteer will provide basic computer/Internet training and health education to seniors and other adults at an affordable housing community. Job Functions OUTREACH Promote resident participation in basic computer and Internet workshops, include designing and posting flyers, speaking with residents, and ensuring activity attendance. Nurture the development of community leaders to support project activities. TRAINING/SUPPORT Provide direct computer-based trainings to participants. Coordinate with project coordinator to set up for mobile computer lab. Support the development of curriculum, and research additional health-based resources on the Internet for English and Korean learners. Exercise high degree of sensitivity and privacy toward personal health information. ADMINISTRATION Participate in bi-weekly team calls. Organize and prepare weekly lesson plans. Distribute, collect, and enter data from surveys following each workshop. Document activities and events through photos, notes, and other observations. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Proficiency and high comfort level with computers/technology. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; ability to verbally express ideas assertively, clearly. Ability to teach technology to community members and colleagues with diverse backgrounds and technology proficiency. Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with others to secure necessary information and cooperation from a variety of people. Korean/English bi-lingual skills required. Background in health, nutrition, and/or gerontology helpful but not necessary. Time Commitment and Pay This is an unpaid, part-time volunteer position for 3-5 hours/week once a week during regular workday hours, as agreed upon between the volunteer and the FPCTIW director. The term of this volunteer position will be from April 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013.

Since 2004, The Sankofa Center, a 501(c)(3) U.S. operated charity has educated village youths and adults about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and prevented through artistic expression. They educate while changing perceptions using culturally comprehensive methods- African dance-dramas- in Ghana, West Africa. They also conduct free counseling, rapid HIV testing in village outreach tours, and provide links to treatment and life-saving drugs for thousands of women, men, and children in Ghana. Programs consisting of a local crew and cohorts of international interns from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. run throughout the year. Program Description: The Sankofa Center fuses tradtional African dance, drama, & contemporary art genres with W.H.O. health information to educate Ghanaian youths & adults about HIV/AIDS. These very necessary performances are both entertaining & educational. Their program utilizes the vibrant energies of interns & a local team to tour various villages & schools to help eradicate HIV/AIDS in Africa through culturally appropriate methods! They also conduct risk assessment/risk reduction counseling & free rapid HIV testing during village outreach to link those needing treatment with medical partners as outlined by Ghana's National AIDS Control Program. International interns are accomodated with full room & board in The Sankofa Center Compound dormitory with exposure to real world traditional Ghanaian life with trusted host families living in the compound. Cultural exposure is also enhanced through weekend trips to popular tourist & beach destinatons. However, interns have the security of Western trained local staff, health and safety protocols, and American trained coordinators & staff liasions to assist interns throughout the duration of their tenure. On completion interns receive a Certificate of Completion commemorating their service providing a great tool for educational and personal advancement.
