Summer Interpretive Naturalist
Superior National Forest -Tofte Ranger District (Northland College) —
Tofte, MN
Superior National Forest is one of the largest National Forests in the Eastern Region of the United States. It is at the southern-most limit of the northern boreal forest, a landscape of birch and conifers with a lake around every corner. It is home to the famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, inspiration to Sigurd Olson, Jim Brandenburg, and others.
The Tofte Ranger District on the Superior will have up to two naturalist positions available for our Summer Resort Naturalist Program on the North Shore. The Resort Naturalist Program has been offering daytime hikes and evening campfire programs at resorts along Minnesota's North Shore since 1984. It is a cooperative program between the Superior National Forest Tofte Ranger District and the Cook County Visitor Bureau. Naturalists are hired as full-time seasonal Forest Service employees at a GS-4 level ($13.41) and accrue both annual and sick leave. The term of employment is approximately from June 3 through August 24, with some degree of flexibility based on school needs. June 17 would be the latest start date possible, but that would reduce time to learn material before presenting. These positions are not internships; however, internships can often be arranged through your school if you are a student. Housing at the Forest Service compound in Tofte will most likely be available. Job duties include presenting and aiding in the development of quality natural and cultural history programs, occasional additional public appearances, and support functions including preparation of presentation materials. Current driver's license required. The position requires evening and weekend work every week. As this is a public position, naturalists are required to wear uniforms and be positive representatives of the Forest Service. We are looking for candidates with experience in interpretation, education, or in the fields of natural or cultural history. As a naturalist, you will gain experience presenting to a wide cross section of people using a variety of program styles that could include campfires, hikes, car caravans, drop-ins, and tours. Naturalists have even built floats and appeared in local parades. For people looking at going into environmental education, this is a great way to spend a summer on the North Shore, meet lots of people, and strengthen presentation skills.
