DescriptionThe LaGuardia Community College Athletics & Recreation Department is seeking an individual capable of assisting with daily sports information tasks and game-day operations. He or she will work closely with the Sports Information Director and other department staff. This position is an unpaid, for-credit or volunteer internship and will provide first-hand experience for anyone looking to break into the sports industry.
ResponsibilitiesThe Recreation & Athletics intern may be responsible for assisting with daily responsibilities such as: program design, advertising and promotion of events, managing the athletics website, creating social media content, being a liaison for the CUNY Athletic Conference, Region XV and NJCAA, maintaining statistics, fan engagement, video production and developing the school’s intramural program.
Additionally, the intern will be encouraged to assist with game-day operations such as: posting live game updates to social media, taking photos during the game, assisting the Sports Information Director with stat-keeping and calling, writing game recaps, and interviewing players or coaches.
RequirementsThe ideal candidate must meet certain criteria and should possess some, if not all, of the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
-Must be 18 years or age or older and must be working towards a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in sport management, communications, journalism, or a related field.
-Must be able to commit to the majority of home basketball games throughout the season
-Must have strong writing skills as well as exceptional oral communication abilities
-Must have strong prioritization and time-management skills in order to complete multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
-Must be self-motivated, creative, detail-oriented and have a sense of accountability
-Knowledge and passion for athletics, especially basketball, is preferred
-Familiarity with NJCAA rules, policies and bylaws are a plus
-Proficiency with Google Drive, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, SIDEARM, Presto or StatCrew are a plus.
-Additional relevant education, training or experience working in sports or recreation is a plus
