When to Start Your Summer Internship Search

It’s rarely too late or too early to try to look for summer internships, but winter break is an ideal time to start your search for an internship you’ll complete over the summer. Some fields, such as government, finance, fashion, and publishing, may have summer internship program application deadlines that are even earlier. Ideally, you’ll begin searching for your internship at least four to five months before you actually plan on starting the position.

Where you are in your career as a student can also be an important factor in the timing of your internship. Starting to explore internships early, such as during your first summer break from college, can give you the opportunity to complete a number of summer internships during your time as a student. The more internships you complete, the more exposure to different career options and professional experiences you will gain. You’ll also add valuable skills to display proudly on your resume.

Types of Internships

There are many types of summer internship programs out there. On Internships.com, you can explore paid and unpaid internship opportunities as well as credit- and non-credit-offering internships. A lot of companies are now realizing the benefits of offering their interns a stipend. They realize that remunerating an intern in an internship program increases their chances of finding a qualified student who has the potential to become a full-time employee with the company. However, if you’re able to consider unpaid internships as well, you might be able to find a position that offers experience that’s even more valuable than a stipend. Additionally, summer internships that offer school credit can give you the valuable benefit of lightening your required course load when you return to school in the fall.

Applying for a Summer Internship

With all the fierce competition that’s out there for these positions, how will you gain an edge over other students and land the summer internship that you really want? To start the application process on the right foot, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Choose the Right Target

Spend some time thinking about what kind of internship experience you want to have over the summer. Are you interested in learning more about the field of marketing or accounting, for instance? Or are you more inclined towards fashion or theatre? Maybe you’re searching for engineering or information technology internships. You’ll find internships in all of these fields (and many more) on Internships.com. As you get further along in your targeted search, review the description of each internship carefully to be sure it’s a good match for what you want to learn and experience.

Create an Attractive Resume

Market yourself and make your resume more effective by targeting the information on it specifically to the position you’re applying for. Let the employer see just how much your capabilities can contribute to the company by highlighting your strengths. Your resume should include your education, your course of study, and mention the special skill sets you have. If you have previous internship or job experience, make sure to show that off, too. Begin your resume with whichever details are most relevant to the summer internship position you’re applying for. However, don’t clutter your resume with all the projects and assignments you’ve ever done. Instead, focus on those projects that are most closely related to the skills and knowledge required by the job you’re applying for. Always proofread your resume very carefully and make sure it is stylistically consistent. For more assistance and comprehensive information on how to write a resume that will help you land the internship you want, visit the Internships.com Student Resources section.

Show Your Interest with a Good Cover Letter

Write a cover letter that is tailored to the specific summer internship you’re applying for. Use this opportunity to show off the accomplishments and skills that you’ll bring to the company as an intern. Be sure to express your interest and enthusiasm for the company and the position. A great way to make your cover letter relevant to the job requirements is to think carefully about what is mentioned in the position description. Consider what the employer is looking for and let them know how you can deliver it. Even with all the information you want to share in your cover letter, however, make sure to keep it short, simple, and to-the-point.

Prepare for the Interview

Congratulations on getting to the interview stage of the process! Now that you’ve gotten this far, make sure to be prepared to impress your interviewer. Before your meeting, study up on the industry and the company. Visit the company’s website and related industry sites to find out what you need to know. Reading some recent industry news can also help you to be familiar with relevant terminology and know what sort of questions your interview might ask.
